Dark 3, episode 5 of the D&R Podcast is brought to you today by you lovely folks on patreon.com/dandr. We've recently added a bunch of new milestones for you guys because you've been asking for them, including the return of our wrestling RPG game, and we really hope that we hit those milestones soon. Visit patreon.com/dandr to find out more. Previously for Group C, the group hit the high seas after leaving the city of Uminiero in their new ship with their new crew.
After finding a place aboard and getting to know their new shipmates, they settled into their new roles and prepared for a very long voyage ahead. And that's where we pick up things today. Let's do that thing where we go around the table and introduce ourselves. I'm Jason, I'm the Dungeon Master, going around the table starting with Brie. Hi, I'm Brianna and I play Klara Rothdael, the half-grow botson. Botson. -Botson. -Botson. No, it's a botson. You had it right the first time. -Pixarupper. -A doxin. -A doxin. -You're gonna drown anyway. -Oh. -Mandy! -Hey! Hi, guys, this is Mandy, I play Iris Hawker, the human doctor of the dreamiest daddy of all.
Slash vector daddy. Or hashtag, I don't know why. Well, we are nailing this so far. Ryan! I'm scared to go now. Hey, I'm Ryan, I play Varys Alder, the half-elf monk. And Lisa. Hey, I'm Lisa and I play Elorath Beestinger, the halfling barbarian captain of your heart. -Aw. -Aw. I made a pose, you guys can't see it. It's very heroic. And Jasper. Hello, I'm Jasper, I play Marek, Elflered, human cleric and also cook for the glittering prize. The menu is posted on the kitchen door. And Zak Zak, he's a ranchy maniac. That's right, what's up, my name is Zak and I play Evelyn Bates, the human fighter.
Are you... I blame Ian for this, but does anyone feel like they gotta come prepared with shtick each time we introduce ourselves now? Nope, I have a tried and true which people love me for, I realize. It's your rock solid stability. You gave me a shtick last time, I mean now I have to. I've never shown up in costume before to a session. Oh guys, if you're on our Patreon, check out the video behind the scenes. -'Cause Lisa brought props and uh... -I did. I appreciate that. I'm still wearing them. I'm posting this to the Discord. Okay, good. Do it. There now. A photo.
Oh, I thought you meant just our Patreon content. Just like, they have it already. Guys, last time. You got a chance to tour the ship and really kind of settled in, find your bunks, get a chance to meet the crew. Or at least some of them. And more importantly than that, you know what role you're going to be playing on this ship. You know where your place is and you also found out that a certain ship that you left behind in Umineiro is hot on your heels. They may not be in pursuit specifically of you, but they're definitely right behind you. So, I guess my next question is, what are you going to do about it?
Great question. Who all saw the ship coming up? 'Cause I feel like, wasn't it just Marek and his new best friend? -I know Marek did. -The original Dollstar. Yeah! That was pretty good. Marek definitely did, 'cause he's wincing in mortal pain. Okay. But I don't know if it was communicated at this point to everybody, but I don't know if we're sort of jumping ahead a little bit, but I would imagine that Marek would be like, just stomping around enough to be able to let everybody know, like, "Argh! Right back there! Tamlin didn't even stop him!" Like, "Argh!" You know?
So you're very visibly upset. This is not something you are trying to hide. Correct. I mean, not hopping up down, like, "We've got to stop them! I can't believe this is happening! Give me the cannon!" But more like, just, "Argh!" Pulling out hair. Like, "How could this even be possible?" kind of an attitude. I mean, he was supposed to be like, "Okay, good. We've bought some time with this. So this is right out of the gate. They're right behind us." That's not how this was supposed to play out, at least for Marek. That makes sense. Who's up top? Who would notice this within the party? 'Cause I would say a couple of the ship's crew would be like, "What's that about?" Like, kind of, you know, maybe not approaching yet, but definitely they're curious. 'Cause I feel like when Marek headed up there, wasn't it supper time?
Yeah, like, I feel like people are eating and stuff like that, so they're like, "If someone's up there, it's probably like a smoke break type of thing." Or to, I don't know, if any of your characters smoke. You know what? I've never asked. Let's go around the table. Yeah. Okay. Iris. Yeah, no. Elra? Uh, no thank you. Clara? Oh, Clara smokes. No. Cloves. Oh, Cloves. Come on. Maybe. Aveline? I don't think he does. I'm kind of thinking maybe he can get peer pressured into it, but I don't think so. Who would do that to Aveline, the monsters? Yeah, that's fucked up. Like it is Necron or something.
Now, if we were talking about your DRP character. Oh, that's a different story. Yes. He's a great guy. He's a doctor. Maric actually doesn't smoke, but has in his wanderings of many, many years. He's partaken of herbs and weeds of the land. Are you saying you've locked these lands? I'm saying Maric has smoked these lands. Oh shit. What about you, Varus? You smoked that Brightport stuff? He would just look at you confused. Okay. Like, wait, what? What are we talking about? Probably with like, he's probably scarfing down dinner still. Just like half spoon still, like constantly in motion and then stops just long enough to like give you a look of like, what?
And then goes right back to eating. Okay. Can, uh, can, can, can be the one handing out plates? Sure. So, okay. Yeah. Let's catch up with the dinner thing first, then we'll catch up with Maric in a second. So how, okay, I'm assuming you're asking because you want to do something. Adalanish. Well, like, I, my role on the crew was second in command, right? Yeah. You're, you're basically in charge of morale. You're, yeah. That sounds like a good morale boost. Hand people their food. Let them take a seat. That's pretty good. So are you, is it more like a, you know, kind of welcoming like, hey, that type of thing?
Oh, of course. It's very welcoming. People will, uh, they'll just sit down and Avalon will come up to them individually and he'll just go, this is for you. I know you're hungry. Nobody can eat like nobody's touching their food. The whole night. It's like, this looks delicious. But no, you know, no one's a number. He's going up to everyone face to face and handing them their food and telling them they are hungry. Okay. And I think most people would be a little, you know what, actually, let's see how well you sell it. Give me, give me, give me a little bit. So this is, this is you trying, right?
You're trying to raise morale. It's he's being so caring. He's, he's telling me that he's, he's, he just wants people to eat, you know, give me a persuasion check. I feel like this is going to be one of the first charismatic roles. Avalon has had maybe these, these crew of sailors are just what he needs. 12 bad, but 12 yolker. I've seen worse from you. True. So I think this is more like, well, that's a weird way to say that thing you said, but okay. I like food. That's like, I don't think anybody's going to be weirded out by it or whatever. And honestly, you got to figure like, even in the modern day, you ever watch like one of those crab fishing shows?
Like, it's a bunch of, okay. It's a bunch of weird folks on those, on their ships. Like you're not cut out for a regular job. Like some of them, like they're just there, they're, they might have a problem getting along with other people. They might be convicts. They might be, you know, just socially awkward. They might be, there's a bunch of, you know, I feel like it's the same thing with adventures. Like this is a sliver of a sliver. Like you guys are adventurers and are already on top of that. You need to be in a ship at sea for weeks at a time. So I think they've seen weirder, honestly.
I like that. Nonjudgmental. Yeah, I'm grateful for that. Maybe we can get along well here. I feel like if Abilene is like handing everybody a plate, like Elorath would like wait until like you brought her a plate and she'd be like, thank you, number two. And like tuck in. She'd be like, all right, now we can eat. Up top with with Merrick. What are you gonna do about this? You've had a chance to kind of vent about it. You're, you know, you say and again, these these guys are way behind, but they're still on the horizon. You could see them. Yeah, this is I'm trying to the picture in my mind, speaking of smoking, like if Merrick were a smoker, like an actual like a pack of cigarettes, he'd be pacing sort of back and forth, looking, you know, back, you know, the way back towards this ship.
Just kind of staring every once in a while, stopping, staring and like lighting a cigarette and just like, you know, at the side of his mouth kind of a thing, just pissed. What do you be thinking about? Not saying a whole lot of words. He's just stomping around. He's not like I said, he's not hopping up and down mad, like, how could this be? We've got to stop this. He's just like, oh, oh, this should not have happened. Like this is not going to be all right. He's thinking about a few things. One of them is that this should not have been the way this was not supposed to be the way it is.
Second thing, though, is Merrick's also trying to calm himself down, not because of stress, but also because he's he's trying a little bit of an attitude adjustment. He's been you know, he he kind of made all of this happen. He was not being really truthful to various about anything, not intentionally, but he was just being so cavalier with what he wanted that he's trying to recenter himself. So he's he's thinking like, oh, I hope they just sink. And then he's like, wait, I can't hurt them. We're not going to try to hurt them. It's just we don't want them to be there.
So he's like having a conversation with himself. And the the thing that Merrick is going to do, actually, the question is, is anybody else with him? Is he just going to people just going to be avoiding him because he's walking around? It didn't sound like it, right? Yeah, I feel like he's not gonna be very welcoming. So if anybody's trying to be around him, it would not be a fun time to be if if Merrick is going to be by himself for a few minutes, sort of just to let the steam off. And he'd probably wave somebody away like I just need a minute, you know, kind of a thing.
Honestly, he's going to stop for a second. He's going to stare and then kind of close his eyes almost in defeat. And he's going to say to Barak, the the demon possession within him. He's going to say, OK, what can we do here? Oh, my God. Yes. See, this is how we kick off an arc. All right. I would say at this point, Barak's been pretty quiet. I would say there's been a lot of changes. There's been a lot of upheaval. And he likes to keep to himself unless you you call on him and he's going to you can kind of feel him in your mind, kind of rouse like he's, you know, not become aroused, but just kind of like.
I assume you're talking about that shit. You know what I'm talking about. What can we do? You ever are you ever going to call with somebody? And you can feel them smiling, right? The air shifts in some way. There's some. Yeah, there's that. Like you can feel you can feel Barak smiling. Oh, we can do lots of things. We need some guidelines, we need some rules. But since I have you with me, it's worth exploring. I don't want to hurt them. I don't want them to suffer. I don't want them to. Sink. I want to slow them down. Or I want to speed us up. There's going to be a pause.
What if we could do both? Merrick is going to do the whatever the moment equivalent of taking a drag on the cigarette and. You know, for the for the drama of it. Go on. If you were to assist me. I. Could get you some weather. That would help push your ship along. Weather's good. Weather's a good boundary. Weather's natural. Weather doesn't necessarily hurt anybody. Go on. What do you need? You know what I need, Merrick? The blood. Among other things, this is going to require a bit of a ritual. Are you comfortable with that? What will be the outcome that determines whether I'm OK with it or not?
Just wait for this airplane. Merrick asks, Merrick, what an airplane is. He said it's an air room for him. He's not very complicated. He's not a technical technical. I'm thinking a storm. With winds strong enough to push your sails and lightning. Precisely struck. In a few of their masts. Nothing too harmful. Just enough to slow them down. Though. It's kind of an addendum. Yes. You can't hold me responsible for what the weather does. If it gets out of control, say. A fire aboard their ship. Or a crashing wave. I know you don't control. Everything. So I don't blame you for this.
But unless I have some guarantees that. They can get out of it. Then never mind. Thanks anyway. America's going to just. Basically put in put him to rest. And you know, before he goes back to his business. Of course. You know, I'm always here to help. Thanks. And besides. I'm sure they won't pass you too quickly. It's only been what? Half a day? Okay. America's going to whatever railing there is on the sort of the edge of this ship. You know, the pacing back and forth. He's going to. He's going to grab. Put his hands on that railing and sort of lean forward like. Holding himself up right like.
Like this. He knows how to push the buttons right. And. Merrick's going to just say. Good night. And honest and honestly. I'm not trying to overdo this by any means, but. That's going to really piss Merrick off. He's. I don't. I don't want to do the D4, but I feel like. No, I mean. This is going to be like. He's just asking for a favor and then the guy's taunting him and there's nothing you can do about it. Right. And he's already on the edge. And I kind of feel like it might be a D4. No, I think that's fair. Honestly, it was a dick move. It was. So he's going to. Calmly say good night.
And I, I'm going to roll for for adding to his stress. All right, let's do it. That's three. Okay, so we'll just shave those off your mental hit points. How's he feeling? It's been a long day, but like not. You've been way more stressed. This is more you can feel the day kind of wearing at you like it's midday at work and you're like, oh, my God, I can't wait to go home. That type of thing. But there is no home like your your home like this. This is it. Yeah. All right. Well, he's going to feel it. And in order to do whatever he can about it, he's just going to go back to kitchen.
He's going to go back to safe space like that's home base and just, you know, clean and cook and whatever he needs to do to make things happen right now. So he's just going to try to distract himself. All right. So eventually. I would say dinner's going to wrap wrap up here and people are going to start to go back to their separate ways. So nighttime on a ship. Traditionally, it's not like you guys are moving full steam ahead unless you're giving the crews specific orders to do so for a few reasons. One, it's way harder to see at night and the odds of you running into something or someone or there being something in the water that, you know, might attack you.
It's way higher to. People have to sleep and there are only so many people on board. Now, if you were to give some order, it's like, no, no, no, we got to keep going through the night. Boom, boom, boom. Then you would just have to leave someone in charge that can act in your stead. Mostly this is directed to Elorath, but everyone basically you have to assign positions so that if something were to happen while they're waiting for Elorath to get back to the helm, they're going to have to move. Okay. All right. Um, so when we're finished with Supper, is it still light enough to see that ship on the horizon or has the sun kind of gone down enough that she wouldn't immediately see it?
I don't think you'd see it, but they give you a report of things like it. Like there's nothing about them that look like they were approaching to do harm. Like, if anything, that looks like a pretty fancy ship. It's not like it's a pirate vessel or anything, so there wouldn't be a reason to come get you and interrupt your meal. It would be more like, hey, by the way, while you were gone, here are the things. Looks like the weather's going to do this. It looks like, oh, there's a ship back there. Just giving you a rundown of things. What does the weather look like it's going to do?
Well, right now, pretty clear skies. It's a lovely breeze pushing the ship along. OK. You're doing a respectable speed right now. You're not breaking your necks, but you're moving along. OK. OK, sorry. OK, so I feel like if that report was kind of given, does anybody know about did Merrick tell anybody that they were trying to delay the other ship a little bit? Merrick would have. I mean, the whole plan was to try to delay them. He got all of the money and the notes and everything from Jodie back at Uminiro. And yeah, it would have all been declared. It's like, OK, here's what we're doing.
I got Tamlin. He's going to like delay them. He's going to do whatever he can bureaucratically to make them not be able to leave. So it would have been completely communicated. OK. Oh, God. OK, so I'm I'm torn because I feel like on the one hand, she would very much love to be a dick to the royals and beat them there. But on the other hand, she's like, this is an old ass ship. And this is like day one on the night. Like, how are how's everybody going to respond to being like, oh, now we have to pull an all nighter just because we want to get there first.
So that's where I'm standing right now. So she would actually probably pull whoever is available just like into the captain's quarters to get their opinions on things. All right. Team meeting. Yes. Thank you. Hell yeah. And basically kind of just data dump all of that on there. I just shared a little note with everybody for ships. Nice. Yeah. We're a bunch of nautical terms on the on the table. It's in notes. Oh, I got a new note. That's funny. Mine just like popped up because I keep my notes in the notes. So it was like, here's a note for you. And I'm like, I already have a note.
The mizzen mast is the largest and perhaps most important mast. Poop deck. I'm 31. I feel like this doesn't help me much unless it has underneath like used in a sentence. The most confusing one to me is the word length. The I don't understand is the overall length of the ship. Can you explain that to me? How long long it is. Long, long. OK, fair, fair, fair, fair. OK. OK, so if we're all kind of like in the captain's quarters or whatever and we're kind of having this discussion, I think one of the things she would ask would be like, what how are we looking in terms of weapons and how are we looking in terms of like structural integrity, like the sails and moving faster?
Those sound like Clara questions. Yeah, I think all eyes would go to Clara. To the bosun. OK, Jason. What are the answers to those questions? So one of the things we got in emails and I want to break this down to everybody is how do cannons work in Theria? If gunpowder doesn't exist, how are you launching giant metallic balls and other things? Sorry, I forgot I wasn't muted. You're the captain. Have some decorum, Madame. I'm sorry. Decorum. Oh. So essentially how it works, are there these do you remember way back in arc one where a group of unnamed individuals blew up some kids?
No. OK, well, so this list of unnamed individuals went down and there were essentially these liquid pots that when the chemicals are mixed together, think Die Hard with a Vengeance. So essentially you're sliding in this pot of liquid and then the cannonball sits on top of it very gently. And when it's lit, it explodes and launches this cannonball out. Now, the fun thing about this is it causes cannons to get gunked up really quickly. And there's a one in one hundred chance off the bat that it just backfires and blows up. Now, the dirtier or more disused or in ill repair the cannon is, the higher those odds are.
So it's a good thing that Clara took a look at the old blasty. Old blasty. Because, yeah, you want to you want to... I believe the exact words used were it probably won't explode. It probably won't explode. And yeah, I'd say there's a 95 percent chance of it not exploding. Oh, that's great. That's what Clara will say as far as the weapons go, though she's also going to go, but we shouldn't have to use those, right? Right. Oh, you're not planning on using them on any other ships or anything, are you? Not unless they come at us first. I'm thinking like self-defense and like maybe just possibly sabotage if we need to.
She's going to make like hold her forefinger and her thumb just like maybe. Clara's going to close her eyes and like put her fingers on her temples like. Dude. But like, you know, mostly defense. She'll make a face kind of embarrass this direction like totally. I can see you wiggling your eyebrows. Singular. I'm not a part of this, OK? It's this is the first time that I've heard of this. What about ship integrity, Jason, and speed and stuff? I mean, the good news is you have a pretty fast ship. You can cut through the water pretty well. And you have some I think Clara would be able to give a list of advantages and disadvantages versus the royal ship.
So if you're stacking these up, if you're doing a tale of the tape, like boxing style, right? Obviously, they have a bigger crew. They probably can afford the best of the best in terms of weapons. And, you know, their ship is probably outfitted with a bunch of little extras that yours isn't. Now, the thing you have in your favor is one, you're the only ones who know that you're in competition with them. Two, you're a smaller ship, which means you can, you know, you can move faster. Just not as long because they have a bigger ship. They have more crew. They can cycle in and out if they really wanted to.
Whereas you guys, you know, you have you have a fine crew, but you can't keep up full speed ahead forever. God, we're sad. You're not sad. This is as OK for your first ship. You have a 15 person crew. You have it. Plus you guys. That's 21 people on this ship. That's not bad at all. You have a boxing ourselves. OK. Yes, that part. Yeah. Thank you. That's good. So that's that's the that's the pros and cons. The only other thing I would say is that you still have like two ballistas. You you you're you're outfitted for the like you can make this trip. Whether or not you can beat the royals there is completely up to you guys and how crafty you get.
So Clara is going to list off all the pros and cons on her hands. Just let Elrath see and know. And then she's going to look around the group. There's a good chance that the royals are going to beat us to where we're going. I suggest maybe once we're there, we try to follow a different lead from there. Instead of tailing behind them. Is Merrick in this meeting or is he was he just in the kitchen? Would you have grabbed him into this? Yeah, I feel like I would have grabbed everybody because like, yeah, she's only the only thing I like. Yeah, she would have grabbed them for me.
Sorry. OK, Merrick would quickly answer for Clara. If if they're at port, they're not going to leave port. Oh, oh, shit. Elrath is going to give you like a also that's in the ship speak notes, by the way. Yes. In port. I've been scrolling up and down. Actually, it's not. No, it's not. It actually is. But I'm sure it's the left hand side of the ship, not actual dock of where you would put a ship. So Merrick, are you like at a disadvantage on something? Merrick, are you saying that we should scuttle their ship? I'm saying. Which may or may not mean to sink the ship deliberately.
I don't want to sink the ship. But I don't want them to get very far. Not for a while. Should we break it deep, which is when damage occurs to the ship below the waterline? What am I doing now? You've caused problems. I simply want them to just be delayed. Like they were they were meant to be from a Monero. I want their speed to be very slow. Speed is in the list, by the way. Boom. Also, which is in the list, but not the same word. All right. That sounds very illegal. I don't know what the laws of the law are, but we might want to try not to get arrested. No, I just want to make it difficult for them.
Give us a fighting chance. That's it. But we can't control what's going on with their ship. I mean, is that really what we're trying to turn to here? I don't know. Forget it. Just forget it. Oh, he's going to pout. He's going to pout a little bit. Clara's going to go over and wrap an arm around him. Awkwardly, but she's going to do it. This just wasn't supposed to be this way is all. That's all I'm saying. You did your best. We're going to figure this out. I understand. I completely understand where you're coming from. And I want to win, too. I want to beat them.
But I also want the gates to work one day. And I want to do it on our own terms because we did a good job, not because we spent our time sabotaging other people. He's just sort of despondent. But he'll kind of nod and I know, I know, I know. Sure. What else can we do to speed up our process? I mean, I know I don't need to be staring at a map all day. I can help out in other areas. Is there a more direct way to get there from what we're doing right now? But can we angle a little bit one way or the other? Can we? I don't know. Jason, as far as I'm as far as I'm aware of, we're pretty much angled to go straight to the next port city, right?
You sure are. OK, so there's what almost he's going to look down and almost hesitate there for a second and then look back up. The only way for us to go any faster or or anything is to skip the next port call and go to the next destination, which that could be extremely dangerous on any supplies or rest or even intelligence. OK, so here's what I'm thinking. I'm with you and she's looking at Clara. I'm with you. I'm not directly hurting or sabotaging them. I do like the idea of having stuff ready in case they come after us or in case something happens. Like a monster or whatever.
I also think and she's going to kind of turn to Evelyn. Maybe we can see during the daytime where it's more safe to if we can speed up a little bit, if there's any way that they can help us go faster, whether it's, you know, hoisting some sails a little bit higher or something. She's like she's like trying really hard. She's like, you know, Evelyn, he's he's nodding and he'll say. I understand what you mean. I think they're responding well to me. You are a people person. Clara's going to lock eyes with him and nod. Oh, we're locking eyes now. You've made a mistake.
I feel like she's got to be used to it by now. She's polite. Clara's going to put her hands on the table and look a little bit frazzled, but trying to calm down and say, look, so far we've gotten where we are by taking their information. If we can get to Talor and find information that they don't find, that's how we get a leg up, not sabotaging their ship or following behind them anymore, because they're faster than us. And they're probably always going to be. They have a ship that moves faster than ours does. We need to change up our strategy. I agree.
We will probably lose. Sorry. We all knew it was going to happen eventually. We will lose this battle. But when we go to Talor, it won't be over. We can do something there. I mean, like, we may get lucky, you know, like I don't like they may get like delayed or something because, you know, they do have such a big ship. There's got to be a lot of things like more things that could go wrong on a ship that big. And she's like wishful thinking now. She's like, I mean, you know, more moving parts or something. But I think OK, I think tomorrow that's what we should do is just stay the course.
Tonight, because I don't want to risk anything, especially if we, you know, do have somebody trying to conjure up a monster or whatever. What? Oh, do we not know that? I didn't I don't think Clara was there for that part. No, but is it just Merrick? No, it was everybody who remember the lion folk lady. Yeah, yeah. I was taken out of the room before she got there. I believe. Hey, I was with Yowie. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yep. Yep. OK. So if you say that. Oh, what? Oh, yeah. There was like a report of somebody on the ship trying to like conjure a sea monster or whatever.
So we're looking into that because I don't know if Merrick has said anything about that's what I meant. Merrick hasn't said anything about that yet. But yeah, you're right. He's going to raise his hand up and just be like, I oh, I think I've got this. OK. And he's just going to wave it away. Not not angrily, but just dismissively like, no, no, no, no, I, I'll I'll fill you in. I'll update you. OK, so I mean, does anybody is there anything that anybody else can think of other than, you know, just try our best during the day when it's safer? And then maybe the closer we get, if we want to try and pull an all nighter before we get to port, you know what I mean?
Varus is going to speak up. What if we focus on the contingency plan? What if what if we focus on that part to where if there's a big wave or there's a storm or something going on that we're not going to be hit as bad and we can recover faster? OK. It's not going to if everything's smooth sailing, it's not going to help us out at that point. But we'll at least be better prepared. I don't know what all that entails. And he's going to look over towards Clara. Hey, Jason, what does that entail? Sorry, I was muted. OK, repeat the question so that I know exactly what I'm answering.
So Varus is pretty much talking about the contingency plan, how they can be better prepared for when disaster strikes. To find disaster. Well, whether that's some sort of attack or whether it's the weather that's that's slowing them down. He's trying to think of anything that could potentially go wrong that they could help out with, especially with somebody in a position like Varus, where he's the navigator. He doesn't need to be staring at a map all day long. He has other hours in the day where he could be assisting. Right. Well, you do have a crew and leaning on them is kind of key here.
Like, one, you have a lookout, so you should be able to have things called out to you well before they're an actual problem so that you can, you know, short of something disastrous coming up from beneath the ship or, you know, a storm brewing out of nowhere type of thing, because there's only so much you could do about the weather. And that's just an all hands on deck situation. You all just have to work together. But I mean, you can reroute other people. Let's say you guys take a hit. You can take people from certain portions of the ship and then just have them all funneled under Clara.
So it's like, look, grab a hammer, grab some nails, help me out, that type of thing. And that could be said for pretty much, you know, any position on the ship. And that basically comes down to that that's that's going to come down to Eloraf and Aveline kind of working together in the heat of the moment because the crew is only going to know what to do when they're being barked at. Okay. Okay. Well, Varys is going to be volunteering himself as Clara's assistant. Merrick is going to look down at his head, his palm. And if you remember, Jody, the head researcher at Uminero, basically put something into his palm that was like a like a tracker.
Anyway, he's just going to look down just as a reminder that that was the case. And he's going to say, one thing I could do is look through all of the research and documents that she gave us, something I haven't done yet. So I could go there. I can at least start there. Iris. I know you're kind of like acting as like the the healer medic, I think. Right. Yeah, I've had a couple of the crew members call me doctor, which is new and interesting. I like it. All right. Um, okay. Do you what do you think about all this to like I want everybody to chime in here. Hmm.
Well, I do agree that the Royals did wrong you wrong you all with what they have done. I do not know how I feel about any like trying to harm them or whatnot. Unless they strike first so I I'm all for just enjoying the trip, just we go as we go and as car said we can find a different way. But I think what we have what we have and what the journey will be how it is, and we should just go with it and figure things out on our own I mean, getting there first doesn't mean anything you have to we still have to find the gates. So, I see no reason to worry.
Okay. So, so we're all on. Oh my god, sorry I'm like channeling work right now and I was just about to be like, okay, so, so we're all on the same page here. Yes, ma'am. Shit. That's, that's work coming out. Okay. Okay. Um, all right, so, so we all kind of agree them. Our best our, we're going to try to kind of stay the course, and she'll kind of like, and as she's looking like so this one will be like she'd look at Evelyn, and a little bit of Clara, it's like, okay, we're going to stay the course and try and see if we can speed up a little, not push it too far in the daytime, and then turning more to Claire Clara and various and kind of maybe prepare for worst case scenarios.
If that's throughout term, and then she'll kind of turn to Merrick. And then in the meantime while we're doing that kind of start looking into what we're looking to do on the new continent. That sound right. Miracle salute. Say I captain. Okay. Yeah, I don't know, just look you deeply in your eyes of course and say, understood a captain. Um, okay. Iris. Yes, Captain. I know you were working with like Diana to do research and stuff. Do you want to like help Merrick with maybe researching through all the stuff that we got. Would that work for you, Merrick that way it's not all on you.
Yeah, that would help actually. We all kind of have a helping hand with each other. She has a teacher little, and then just nod slowly. Okay. Um, okay. I think tomorrow. Actually right now I'm, I'm gonna go find Zalu and then that other guy that was in here whose name. I can't remember right now. And I think we should discuss the plans with them since they came to us yesterday. And then go from there. Does that work for everybody. I can. Can I get you guys to do me a favor. So, you had a chance to explore the ship and, you know, probably take stock of things.
And we talked about weapons and the ship itself and how it's built what I want to do right now is go around. And I'm going to do a couple of roles to see what ammunition is looking like look what kind of ammunition you have like what what variety of stuff. What variety of medicine you might have on board that that that kind of thing. Um, so let's start down this list Clara, could you do me a favor. Give me a flat d 10. The higher the role, the more well equipped you're going to be in terms of ammunition. Okay, doggy. Five. Okay, so you have an estate you could you have a decent number of cannonballs.
So you probably have about eight. But you also have some change shot. Now the way change shot works is essentially two cannonballs tied together with a heavy length of chain. And what it's used to do is break masts off ships, leaving them stranded in the water basically. Let's do medicine. I like it. But like chain shot. How many chain shots do we have? You got three. Thank you, Ray. Iris do me a favor, give me a flat d 10. Higher the number, the more well stocked and the better medicine you're gonna have. Okie dokie. Holy shit. Beautiful. Oh, oh my God. Okay, so check this shit out.
You're gonna have an assortment of healing potions on board this ship. And I would imagine you have like a medic station like a like a nurse's office type of thing, right? So you could do triage and you can heal people up. You're also going to have some hardcore drugs on the ship. You're gonna have several doses of Orinash, which is a very powerful. It's essentially Theria's answer to morphine. It is a very powerful narcotic that, of course, can be abused, but mostly it's it's meant to alleviate pain and to it's mostly used in the field. If you don't have a healer present or someone with some sort of magic affinity, you can use that as a way to stave off pain and shock and maybe even death for a while until you can get someplace where you can.
Really stabilize them. Oh, yeah. Keeping that locked up because. Oh, yeah. This is definitely a lock and key situation. Nice. Let's tackle water. Varys. Yeah. Let's see how much water is on board. Obviously, you have a pretty good stockpile, but let's see how good it is. Give me a flat D10. Okie dokie. Six. So you have right now about enough water, give or take a disaster. You could be at sea for a good month without having to maybe catch rainwater or, you know, do something else. Although the crew probably believes you can just grab water out of the sea and boil it and you'll be fine.
OK. Just wanted to hear that noise from Lisa. I'm pretty sure that's how it works. That's totally how it works. Yeah, it's science. It's called salad-nization. I did it the other day. Pull up some water. Right? Driddle some ranch in there. Who didn't do that? Salad-nation. That's when you drink ranch instead of water. Uh, Marek, how much food you guys got on board? Right. Let's see here. Seven. So, you obviously have enough food to make the trip, but what this is for is basically it's like, hey, can you have a nice spread every night for a month? And you basically can.
You might have to skimp on a few meals every once in a while, like, hey, one course tonight, guys. I can't make a fucking luau every time we sit down. But it's not going to be like, oh, we're eating crackers again this evening. Great. Good. Morale. Yep. All right. Back to what you guys were doing. Elarath said she was going to fill in Zalu and Yarlie. Thank you. Yarlik? Yarlie. Yarlie. Sorry. God damn, deaf. Wait, Yarlie with an R? Yes. I thought it was Yalie. I thought you said Yowie earlier and I'm like, no. He speaks. He's a little punk horn, leghorn. So he's like, Yalie.
Yalie. All right. Just double checking my NPC list. Reed? Yep. Augie? Yep. Yarlie? Yep. Zalu? Yep. Thoreen Opal Donstar? Oh, yeah. Sweet. So how's about we advance time to the next morning? Does that sound okay? Yeah. I imagine you guys are going to get some sleep and stuff too. And it's up to you whether you want to tell the crew to continue moving throughout the night. But for the most part, I think they're going to, you know, they're probably going to taper off. So it is the 12th of Ulta Ornn, bright and early. Man, the sun coming up on the horizon is probably going to be one of the most beautiful sights.
Like, I would imagine if you work, like, okay, Varus has probably seen this dozens of times because you work in Brightport. You're on the docks, you see this, you know, but there's something about being on the water where there's just nothing on the horizon. You see the sun pop up, you know, it proves there is flat beyond a shadow of a doubt. I'm joking. I'm joking. #FlatThariasSociety Where's the curve is all I'm saying. There should be a 15 degree drift. Did you watch that? Did you watch the documentary? Oh, my God, yes. When you watch the flashlight above your head now.
When when you guys are talking about it, like, oh, we have to do this. So we watched it and we were both dying. My favorite last line is like, huh? That's interesting. My life is a lie. OK, sorry. So, right, there's would totally be there that morning, by the way. I would normally he's normally an early riser, but especially that first morning, he's going to wake up just before the sun gets up or rises above the horizon and be out there waiting for it. Actually, Merrick is going to be exactly doing exactly the same thing for probably different reasons. But he's to be at the bow of the ship, the forward area, because the sun's going to be coming up.
He's going to be facing the sun very deliberately and doing sort of early morning meditation. And he's got his his amulets and holy symbols and everything around a monitor and all of that. Just it's odd because it's not something that he's he's all into. But strangely, he's he's put all that together and doing that anyway. Back to various. Sorry, but but you would see Merrick if that's the case. If that was going on, various would actually walk over, not say anything, and he would stop a respectful distance away, just more like he's curious as to what you're doing, because I'm guessing this is also one of the first times you've done this since he's been a part of the group.
Yeah. Yeah. This is this is him reconnecting in some way or at least attempting to in some in some weird emotional way. So then various isn't going to say anything. He's going to he's going to be very respectful about it and kind of, you know, keep the peace and quiet about everything that's going on. But he's going to walk up slowly with a little bit of distance and just lean on the railing of the ship, looking towards the sun. Merrick will eventually he'll he'll notice just sort of in the back of his mind that there's another presence and very calmly, he'll say.
It's beautiful, isn't it? Absolutely. It's like I'm used to seeing some stuff like that, but just with nothing being here, I mean, it's it's a rare sight. Merrick's actually going to sort of scoot over. He's actually going to be sort of crisscross applesauce on the ground, kind of meditating a bit. He's actually going to move over almost like it's to join him in doing the same thing. But he's not going to say anything. He's not going to make a big deal out of it. Oh, he would join. He's not he wasn't trying to keep a distance as like, you know, we each need our own space.
He was just trying to be respectful as like he's not invading your bubble. But giving him the opportunity, he would he would come over and then just follow along with whatever meditation sequence you're doing. He's going to be doing a lot of breathing and it's going to be he's almost going to amplify that in a way, almost as though he's you know, if you can imagine going to a yoga studio instead of like, now everyone, you know, feel the warm light in your feet or whatever. He's he's going to sort of do it almost as a like follow me and he's going to sort of to try to just sort of lead the lead the meditation for a little bit.
And that's it. That's all that's all it's going to be for him is just to just to be there with someone else. I think just a reflection of the moment. Yeah, and Varis isn't going to try to push any conversation or anything he's going to go, this is almost bringing him back to what he had going on with his with his mother when she was still alive of some of the different practices and following along and meditation stuff going on. So this is something that would almost he would something that like when you sit down and start to do something and you kind of get that shock reality of deja vu, but in a very comfortable way.
And he's going to kind of hold on to that as much as possible throughout this entire moment. I imagine this is probably going to go on for longer than a couple of moments, it's going to be a uncomfortable but comfortable, you know, 10, 15 minutes of just like, like stay in the moment of of breathing and and and that's just calming as the sun is rising with with with all this happening. And at some moment, it'll almost be for whatever reason, it's just going to feel like it's oh, this is this is time for it to be done now. And Merrick will almost shake it off, you know, this sort of roll the shoulders a little bit and sort of stare into the into the horizon.
He's not going to look at various but he is going to say, navigator, I can't think of anyone better to choose to be our North Star. And he's going to gently clap various on the back. And the sense of this will be almost in a weird way of saying that he's sorry for for how things have gone down. I don't think various is going to know how to respond. I think a smile is going to come onto his face and he's almost going to chuckle a little bit as almost like, you know, it's a weird twist of fate type of thing. He's just going to say thank you and keep staring into into the horizon.
And Merrick is just going to, you know, he's going to settle in into, you know, sort of again, shaking his shoulders and just sort of being in the moment for everything. But in terms of discussion or anything else, he's he's really just going to not. He's not going to keep talking or anything like that. Yeah, I think it's one of those conversations that a lot is being said without saying anything. Yeah, that's it. There's a there's a big body language thing going on. It's just kind of a connection and kind of being present in the moment. And it just kind of end up sitting there for probably 30 minutes or so.
Yeah, that's it. I need two rolls. One, I think I'm going to get from Elarath, which is could you give me a flat D20? And this is just for the weather today. Let's see what the weather is going to be. OK. Nope. Oh, no. Need that contingency plan. Yeah, that's a good thing we discussed things yesterday. Yeah. Sorry, fellas. That is. And ladies. I'm sure there's going to be a little rain. So about that beautiful sunset sunrise, we just did you mean? No, I read by thunderstorm on the horizon. That just means there's something rolling in behind it. Don't take my moment away from me, Jason.
That's yours to keep. You guys were actually screaming over the rain the whole time. I can't think of anyone better to be our North Star! Mulligan. No, no, no. And, Avalon, could you do me a favor? Roll me a flat D20. Of course. Anything for you, my friend. Beautiful. So this is for now, and we're going to roll three things. One is going to be for the weather. Two is going to be for what's happening aboard the ship. Basically, any little little crew things, any you know, and it doesn't have to be catastrophic or bad. Sometimes it's good stuff like that. 16, Avalon just rolled.
Your crew is going to be so well rested. Like, we're talking... Man. I'm talking plus two to anything they attempt today. Yes. Springing their step, ready to go. They are, I would say, probably, Yarlie and Zalu had a conversation with everybody. It's like, look, you know, this ain't just about getting there. Let's be snappy about it. Let's do some stuff, right? And to that point, I'm going to talk to you guys about a couple of options you might have in just a moment. But you may have heard me say I need trace rolls. I think I'm going to ask Mandy. Iris, could you give me a flat D20?
And this is for what's happening outside of the ship in the waters around you. Last time I did this was not great. Well, then you're due. Redeem. Shut up, Jason. Oh! And Mandy rollers together. Water spout. Typhoon. No, um. So you're going to get, you're going to get Auggie call down from the crow's nest and he's reporting on the ship that was behind you guys. And it does appear that they stopped overnight as well. So that's a good luck. They're not they're not risking their ship. And like I said, they're not under the impression that they're in a race. However, it appears today that they are moving.
They are picking up speed. Now, there are several options for you guys. You can tell your crew basically to just all out, right? Just go. Just, you know, full steam ahead. Let's get going. Now, the maximum speed that your ship can do with a regular wind is right around three, maybe four miles an hour somewhere in there. And you in heavy winds, as long as it's with you, if you try to ride that and really just go, you can you can you could really haul ass. Now, the option was given to just avoid the next port town. And that is totally an option you could do.
Now, we discussed last time, if I may share my screen with you for just a moment. You guys are right about here ish. So you're not too far away from Alara. Now, the options we discussed before where you could stop in Westport and then decide where you want to go. Or you could just continue and either go south and take the long way over or south and take the quick way over or north and take the long way. That's that's slightly more safe because Southway has pirates and bandits and stuff. The Southway has a lot of stuff. Yeah, it has more. Yeah. It's pirates.
I have that in my notes. Mm hmm. You made a great point of, you know, pirates aren't going to want to destroy a ship. They're going to want to keep it intact. Right. So I thought that was a great point. I know we probably I probably asked this last time, is Westport like the only big one? Like there's no kind of port on the southern end of. OK, if you're asking me if there are places to dock on the southern end of Talor? Yes. Or, well, restock is more what I'm looking for. OK. The only reason I mentioned Westport is because the it's the only demilitarized zone on Talor.
Mm hmm. Anything south of that is gift territory. And you you run the risk of running afoul of them. They can be really prickly people. Both sides can be prickly. But unless you can prove your allegiance to them in some way. Ah, OK. Yeah. OK. Out of character a little bit, but I'm sure Clara would be thinking of this, too, because I have a mindset where she's trying to think of ways that they can get the upper hand on the gate situation. Talor has the Githzerai, who are known for being a very studious people. So if we did go south and we went to the part of Talor where the Githzerai are, does she know of any like libraries or like places of research where they might be able to get more information on the gates that the royals wouldn't have while the rest of the folks are restocking the ship?
Can I add on to that? I'm sorry. Go ahead, Varys. Real quick, we also have a lionfolk on board. True. Well, she can stay inside. But it's still one of those things. If they're really if they're wanting us to prove everything, they're probably going to check the ship. We shouldn't we should expect inspections for sure. Well, let's answer that first question. Clara, give me an intelligence check or you know what? Actually, give me a wisdom just to see if you have a lay of the land here. Can I give you an intelligence? Well, I guess it depends on how you got this information.
Do you feel like you would have got this information by reading something? The only problem with that is it could be outdated information. Whereas if you're hearing word on the street or maybe from another Talor traveler from Talor, that would be more streetwise. Yeah, I would probably be someone she met while she was a soldier or something like that. Then give me that wisdom check. Oh, negative one. Oh. I'll never mind any of that. Well, you're aware of a city like a Talor main gifts or a city. You're really not sure about what's in it, but you do know again that there are studious people, so it stands to reason.
But you have no proof. Well, never mind then. Okay. Boy, no. Were there any more rolls? No, no, no. How about we resolve some of those rolls? Okay. So I would say two hours are going to go by while you're getting your... I was going to say if they're going to be... I think first thing in the morning, Elrath would like to kind of grab Aveline and then go meet up with Zalu and Yarli. And just kind of discuss, just let them know what we talked about the night before. Just like, here's our plan. And then if they can tell... Is the weather something that we could tell right now?
With the dawning of the ship, like red sky in morning kind of thing? Yeah, yeah, no. This would be something you can go, "Oh, we're going to have a rough day" type of thing. Okay. Then she'd probably get them all... Probably have them meet her at the helm or something. And just kind of lay it out there like, "Okay, here's what we were thinking." And ideally... I don't want another ship really tailing us too close. But looking at that and kind of gesturing to the horizon, if they can see it. Like, what are your suggestions? Because until I saw that, I was going to say, "Let's try and go for it.
Like, really push it today." But, you know, maybe we need to be a little bit more cautious with that. Or do you have experience kind of like, you know, steering into it? Right. And Aveline would also like, since they're all four together just kind of talking. Aveline would want to kind of ask them, since they're experienced sailors. Like, how does a second in command actually motivate? Because he's not sure. He's more soft-spoken because that's what he's used to. But it doesn't mean he has to be. He's not incapable of speaking louder. So he just wants some tips.
Well, okay. First off, if you're asking about the weather. Yarlie's probably going to speak up first. Well, I have been in some scrapes. And I have to say this doesn't look too... Invitin'. Okay. Zalu, so I think Zalu's more paying attention to your lead and she's going to listen to Aveline. "This is your first time doing this, isn't it?" "Oh, no. This is my first time on a boat." "Oh, my God." Just staring at her like there's nothing wrong we just said. Okay. She's... Okay. You ever see me stroke my beard? Please have her correct him and say "ship." Please. Oh, he said "boat" too, for sure.
This nautical jargon's not known on him. And cut this suggestion from the main shelf. So, okay. She... Oh, my God. So you ever watch me stroke my beard in Skype if I'm thinking about something? She's going to do that with her face, like just like, "Oh, oh, no. Okay, that's not great." "This is just between the people standing right here." "How many of you have actual ship experience?" Um... I grew up in Ebony Harbor, so I know a little bit, but maybe one person. Aveline nods. Is Clara a part of this? She can be. Yeah, jump in. Clara's going to kind of like make sort of a grimacing face and be like, "I grew up underground." Yarlie's going to be scratching the back of his head.
Well, that is an interesting tidbit of information. Look, I don't want to speak for my tall friend here, but I think you're doing just fine. We're going to be great. Now, that storm on the horizon is a worry. But if you let us do our thing and we have a bit of luck, we should be fine. That's what I like to hear. Okay. I'm more familiar with the sailing on like Ebony Harbor side, not out here. So that's why I wanted to talk to you guys and let you know that this is what we were thinking. How do we make it happen? And so with that kind of wrinkle in the plans, I trust you guys and your ability to get through that.
And anything that you need, just holler and I will get it for you and we will make it happen. And she's looking at them like, "This is total sincerity. I want to help you out 1000%!" Oh yeah, Evelyn's backing her. Jason, is there some type of work I could do to remember anything that a boatswain should do before a storm? Because I read that book cover to cover. You sure did. So could I recall something? I think give me an intelligence check. Could I have advantage because I read the book? I, okay, normally I'd say no. I'd say because you just read it. Like the information is still fresh.
I'm going to read that book every night before bed. Anyway, intelligence check. Hell yeah! Oh wow. We're going to drop that five and take an 18. So, okay. I think Clara would have a pretty good idea of like, okay, we're going to have to... We're really going to have... It's all about angling the ship the right way so you don't capsize and, you know, getting these sails ready and all that. Like if there's a lot of prep work and then it's minute to minute seeing what the storm is doing and reacting to it because your entire... Basically the entire crew is going to be trying to maneuver this ship so that you are running into the waves and trying not to spill overboard.
If the waves start hitting your broadside, it could flip the entire ship over. And that's bad. Anybody see the perfect storm? It's bad. So. So Clara is going to list that off out loud and she's going to use as many terms specifically from the book as she can possibly remember. And she is trying to make Yarlie and Zalu feel better about the situation by proving she knows what she's talking about at least a little. Zalu's actually going to smile a bit. Yes. Why don't you come with me? We should be preparing. Yes, ma'am. No, I'm kidding. She'll give a nod and follow wherever she goes.
Forever. To the ends of the earth. Damn furry. Well that escalated. Get it. Hell yeah. So you've prepped everybody. You're getting ready now. Oh boy. These clouds are going to start to roll in and you're going to see nasty strikes of lightning off in the distance. Like from where you're sitting. If you were to gauge this lightning strikes are usually, you know, bright flash of light. Boom. Thin, you know, thin strike. These are big, thick lightning bolts. Like it is a nasty storm. You're going to see really choppy water up ahead and the wind every once in a while you're going to, there's that smell in the air.
And a gust is just going to hit you like. Like everything's fine and you're going to feel it roll in almost all at once. What do you say to your crew to get them ready? Because you can, you could feel that mood on the ship kind of turn, kind of change. You could feel everybody's just like tensing up. They're like, Oh, okay. All right. Like this is exactly what you don't want. What do you say to the people? Damn it. Okay. Um. Okay. I feel like Ella is going to kind of like make sure she has everybody's attention and she's going to say. Turn to think. Okay. Okay.
I know this looks pretty bad, but I've been talking with the early and I know that you guys can do this and I'm here. And we're all here and we're going to work together and we can do this. It's nothing more than you haven't seen before. You know, it looks not great, but we're going to ride this out and it's going to be fun. And afterwards, we're going to look back and we'll be like, can you fucking believe that we just did that? And then I'm buying everybody a beer. That was terrible. God damn it. Oh, let's see how it was. That was that was spectacular.
You do me a favor. You give me a persuasion check like, oh, yeah, yeah. Do it. Mm hmm. I want to have winter's like step up, like start cheating. I didn't want to ruin it. Okay. You know what? No matter how how the wrath rolls, though, you should still be. Oh, yes. Nineteen. So I did. Okay. It's this captain's hat, y'all. Yep. That's what it is. And the sunglasses on top of your regular glasses. That's what did it. So your scarf blowing in the breeze, this these gusts picking up. So you're going to hear that choppy water start to slam against the side of the boat and and the sorry ship.
The ship's going to jostle slightly. You're like, OK, let's let's do this. Here we go now. Get ready, guys, because I'm about to toss a lot of shit at you. Hang on. Wait, if you're going to toss a lot of shit at us, there's one thing that hasn't been discussed yet. It's going to help absolutely everything. And that is Merrick's been preparing breakfast for everybody. No, I'm not kidding. This is going to get the energy that everybody needs. It's going to get everybody happy and excited and it's going to be exactly what they needed. And it's going to give everybody a plus what, eight plus nine to every role that everybody has for the rest of the day, I'm sure.
So I'm going to tell you what it is and you can tell me how awesome this is. This is going to be that is a buffet. This is going to be he's going to be making tiny omelettes. Now, I don't mean like a big omelette, like a three egg omelette. This is like it's about the size of a coaster, like at a bar. Right. Like a round coaster of an egg with cheese inside of it. It's going to be a little omelette. It's folded in half. So it's like a little dumpling of an egg. It's like a little tiny egg omelette. There's going to be a little bit of berries, just some fruit with it.
And also and this is the big deal. If you'll recall, there is no such thing as coffee or chocolate in Theria. But what he has been working on for quite some time is something called coffee, which is made from the roots and and all sorts of of crazy herbs that he's put together. That's that's roughly equivalent to what you would imagine coffee to be. He's been working on this for a while and he's going to have as much of that prepared for the for the entire crew as possible. I think that sounds wonderful. Could you give me a favor? Give me a roll with your cook's utensils.
Oh, that's fun. Is he proficient in cook's utensils? Oh, he is. It's already in your skills. I can't imagine a world where Merrick wouldn't be. There is no world. Sorry. Hang on in there. Just the number. Yeah, you go. 19. Jesus Christ. All right. So, yeah, man, this this this rolls out like I would say just after you were done talking to Ferris, you go and you cook and you you just bang this out. And your your new Aladrin buddy's helping you cook. Oh, Reed, he's going to give Reed he's going to be he's he's going to be real harsh with Reed most of the time, but he's going to be like, nice.
Nice job. Oh, like after everything's said and done. Yeah. Yeah. OK. Well done. I like that. Just one. That's all. Yeah, that's all it gets. All right. So this storm is going to start rolling in. Properly. And the ship is going to start being pounded with these taller and taller waves. And every time you're going to have to I'd say the railing is like like three feet tall, something like that. So there are people bracing themselves. Some people are tied down. Poor Augie in the crow's nest is just holding on for dear life. Like it's just being pounded. So first off, I'm going to need.
I'm going to need our quartermaster. I'm going to need Verus. Give me give me a nature check. Oh, oh, OK. 16. That's not bad. So, OK. You are going to try and advise during this entire situation. It's like, oh, it looks like it's we need to turn this way. And like you're trying to outthink the storm, basically. And for the most part, Verus is going to do a pretty, pretty damn good job. It's going to be a couple of times, though, that you're just going to you're going to make the wrong call. You're going to you just you can't be right 100 percent of the time.
And a nasty wave is going to hit the side of the ship and it's going to fling crew everywhere. Now, thanks to these big railings, people won't be falling overboard. But what's going to happen is they are going to slam their skulls sometimes or, you know, crack their shoulder or something like that against this hard wood. They're there. Their footing is just going to slip out from underneath of them. And they are just going to plant face first into into the deck, into the rail. It's it's nasty. Like you can just hear people screaming to try and bark orders or, you know, there there might be a loose rope.
And when there's so OK, when a rope unties in a storm like this, it basically is a lash and it's going to get caught in the wind and just start trying to strike people. So it's like, oh, shit, OK, I know this person just felt make sure they don't fall overboard, but we got to secure this rope. And like they're just running around. Iris, we're going to need a medicine check to take care of all these people who who might have broken bones or or or fractured, fractured limbs here. All right. And she's trying to be a soothing presence to, you know, saying, oh, Vecna is watching over you.
Don't worry, I've got you. We've got you. Oh, that can do it. Oh, this button. Hey, oh, shit. OK, it's twenty five. Iris is on it. So Iris is we're talking World War Two field medic like she's in the shit like she like I picture her like kind of like jogging across the deck and almost sliding to get to these people, making sure that she isn't going to fall herself and making sure like you've got people who who just bash their heads on this rail and they're laying there. Woozy probably seeing double or triple. And then Iris's boob window is hovering over them and she's got them like she is going to she's she's going to stop the bleeding and she is going to get these people back on their feet so they can help secure these ropes and make sure that they can change the sales when they need to change them.
OK, that wave jostled some things loose. We we now have a problem down below, like you are like the cannon has shifted, like things are being thrown. I would say in the kitchen area, those those those those cabinets that were already kind of on their way out anyway, like pots pans everywhere, like things are just falling all over. So I need I need our bosom. I need them to make a check with their carpenters tools, like let's like like we're we're trying to just hammer things down, just batten everything down. Here it goes. There we go. Oh, oh, that's not the worst.
That's a nine. Yeah. So all these all these difficulty checks are basically being judged on the caliber of the storm. And if you remember, you rolled a four out of 20. This is a nasty storm. So I would say Clara is just running around trying to keep up with all this. But there's so much chaos. If if someone runs up to Clara, it's like, what do I do? What is Clara's response to them? Like, what do I work on first? Like, where what where do you need me? Could like, OK, what is breaking at the moment? Like what? Like, obviously the kitchen, everything's kind of falling, but it's a higher priority than that.
I would say the hull of the ship itself, like there's a couple of leaks, like nothing, nothing, nothing terrible, but obviously those need to be patched now. OK, and then she would give them that task and she would she would be doing it, too. OK. That brings us to our first mate. Now, while all of this is going on, this this this this utter chaos, this, you know, people are being slammed around that at this point, these waves are huge. And you're just trying to keep the ship right. Like you're trying to steer into the ship. So are these waves. So you will, if you're lucky, hit these massive like 30 foot waves and you are going to the ship is going to arc upward like you're driving up a dune and come down the other side and just hit hard.
You know, front of the ship first and everyone's going to be thrown about. But thankfully you're not going to capsize. What the hell does Avalanche say to everybody to keep their spirits up? What are you yelling over these winds and this rain and every once in a while, this nasty thunder and lightning? So I assume like I even though it's it's pure chaos, I assume there's like a split second where like the noise has died down. Like it's just the rain and it's possible to like get a word in edgewise over like the thundering weather. I think, Evelyn, he would just he would make his his his message real short and sweet because, you know, people are trying to focus.
He would just go place to place, just trying to he would do more like movements, like trying to pick people up, trying to. If they if they there are down, people are like sliding all over the place, if he has his footing, he'll try to pick people up and they'll just be screaming. We're not dead yet. Keep moving to whoever you can. Just like he he knows yelling isn't really going to get the point across. So he's going to going out to people individually and telling like giving people inspiration person by person, you know, because what else is he going to do?
Give me an intimidation check. Totally fair enough. Come on, Evelyn. OK, another 12. That's a 12. I will remind you, you have inspiration. Oh, do I? You do. I'll use my inspiration. OK, give me that role again. Sure. Crew is ready to do their jobs. Oh, oh, my God. What a waste. Let's do sorry. Would you like to burn your inspiration? You stupid motherfucker. Go and fall for it. Wow. Let's you know, when you get all hopped up on ranch, you get really aggressive and just hyped up. Don't be mean to my friend, Zach. OK, let's let's relax. Everything's fine. I mean, not on the ship, but like outside of it, everything's fine.
So your I would say people are just confused and maybe frightened and maybe they're missing some cues like they're not. It's like, what? Snap out of it. That type of thing. Like they're having numb flashbacks and people are getting pelted with these ropes and they're not maybe hanging on in the way that they should. The ship takes a dive and they might have their arm pulled out of the socket like it's like they're they're they're trying to hang on for dear life. But instead of planting their feet and and holding on with both hands, they're dangling. The wind is picking them up.
It's terrible. Down below in this kitchen, I need Merrick to do me a favor because I would say there there's there's this living quarters type of thing where maybe a couple of people were sleeping. They're there. They're on their off shift and things just falling all over. Right. People people could get crushed or, you know, knocked out. So I want you to do me a favor and give me an athletics check. I will do it. And your friend Reed is going to help. Twenty four. Jesus. OK. Fantastic. So. You are going to run through this ship and just try to secure everything that you can make sure people are getting to safety.
Reed is going to be right behind you making sure and kind of kind of low key trying to save all the cooking utensils and stuff, too. Because you know what? If you live through this storm, you still get to cook. You know what I mean? Like this is nice cookware. People have they've got to they have something to look forward to. So we've got to make sure that we keep these utensils just right. Exactly. And that may seem like it's on a lower priority than everything else. And everyone's living obviously takes takes the center stage. But after it's all done, you still have to eat and exist.
So, oh, boy, here we go. Finally, I need two more roles. I need someone here to volunteer for a special role. And I'll let you I'll let you decide who that's going to be in just a minute. First, Elarath, captain. I need you to give me an intelligence check. Why? It's just what I need from you right now. Do you know what her intelligence is? Right. Look, I'm saying maybe you're due. I'm saying she's got a negative two. OK, look, before you roll. If you crit, I'll count it as two successes. OK. All right. Why not? You can do it. Oh, my God. All right. Oh, my God. OK. Fuck it.
Nope. Oh, OK. That's a four. Yeah. Sorry, guys. She's. So this is this is a combination of a bunch of things. Again, you are trying to outthink the storm and the sea and waves. And it's it's sometimes either you're not responding fast enough, the ship isn't responding fast enough. So you are trying desperately to call out to people and you're you're you're steering this ship and you miscalculated big time. And one of these, you know, thirty five, forty foot tall waves is going to hit the side of the ship. And the entire thing is going to rock to the left, which I believe is port.
I'm not going to I'm not going to is port. Oh, my God. Thank you. It is port. So you're going to would you say it lists to the left? Oh, absolutely. I would say it listed. I'd say a good forty five degrees. Like everyone's just fucking screaming. Forty five degree heel. That's the tilting of a ship over to one side of the seas. So you guys are just like it's this just cold, stinging rain and then this fucking huge wave. And you're going to hear people cry out. And then it hits the side. I now need two more rolls. One, I'm going to roll for the crew to see if you lose anybody.
Oh, no. Do we get the plus two for them? You definitely do get the plus two to them because they are. So not three. Oh, no. Well, we'll see. We'll see who it is. So it's already definitely going to happen. You just said, well, I mean, if anybody. Wow. Jesus. We'll see who it is. Not. Wow. OK. So right off the bat, this is an experienced crew. So I'm going to give them a total of plus five because while they are experienced, there's only so much you could prep for. And this storm is terrible. So as long as they don't roll below a twelve. No one's going overboard. They're just going to be hurt.
And we're going to have to like Iris is just going to be working overtime tonight. Are you ready? They get a plus five. So is it like twelve total or twelve on my die? We're looking for twelve and up and everyone's fine. OK. Just banged up and hurt. Oh, my God. Eight. Oh, no. We're in trouble. I kill people. You didn't get the score and kill people. We might get them out. It's OK. L.A.F. Do me a favor. Give me a flat T four. So this is where I'm going to roll for guys. I'll roll high here. OK. Two. Two people after this this massive wave just comes down over the deck and it's going to sweep two people.
Clean off. Clean off. Now, the good news is it's just the crew and not you guys. Well, the bad news is you just lost two crew members over the over the deck. They're overboard. And this storm is just nailing you. Can we see them? I'll let you try in just a minute. The good news is they can swim if that helps. Oh, it does. It does. Most people who sign up to be on a boat can swim. You have to be really stupid to get on. Yeah. Really stupid. Everyone on Discord let me know that. Oh, stop. So here's the thing. I need a special role. One of you is going to have to roll a flat D 20.
And as long as you don't roll an eight or below. Lightning isn't going to strike the ship. Let me do it. I need to I need to make up. Do you want a redemption? Yeah. OK. You said a flat D 20? Flat D 20. This is just luck, baby. Oh, it's just luck. I got it. Easy. Look at that. Oh, my God. Nine. Easy money. Nine. Nine. Nothing. You're welcome. If that isn't luck standing off screen of this podcast, just doing that thing where they pound their fist into their open hand. I don't know what is. I'm waiting, bitch. Oh, my God. Oh, man. OK, so Augie is still in the crow's nest.
Oh, thank God. Yeah, but we lost him so much. I'm sorry. Man, I'd be up here. He might be praying, but he's still in the crow's nest. Now, there are two people overboard. Who's going to run to the side and give me a perception. Merrick, Merrick, Merrick. Let's do it. Give me a perception check. Could you do it as well? You absolutely can. Now you'll be abandoning your positions. Well, I feel like he's up at the top anyways. Yeah. OK. Yeah. I mean, you're here with just peer over. That sounds fine. Oh, shit. OK, so that's a 20. Oh, nice. Yeah, that's a 14 from Merrick.
He's topside, which is the upper deck, not the lower deck of a ship. That's part of the part of the terminology. But yeah, Ferris. Nice job. Oh, boy. So you're going to see two figures bobbing in the water. Now let's do a dice roll. Let's let's let's let's just. Here we go. OK, two. And four. Oh, my God. OK. Zalu is going to be in the water. No, we can't have that. She was helping me remember. She I mean, she was helping you guys prep and then you prepped. Zalu is going to be in the water and Thorin is going to be in the water. Oh, God. OK, so there are life preservers.
Hang on. Go ahead. Go ahead. Go ahead, Kevin. I was going to say I'm just going to put this out there now. If you guys are yelling, I see them. Elorath is going to hand over the helm to Yarlie or whoever is standing closest to her. And she's going to immediately grab life preservers and a rope. And she's going to go try to go get them. But just like overboard. Yeah, because that's what she did in in the river to go get that person. Oh, my God. You're right. Yeah. This is her. I mean, this is this is scaled up a bit. But yes, I'm going to see you. This would be right next to Elorath and he would basically see them to go overboard.
He would scream man overboard and point out to him. And then I picture Elorath almost like, here, steer the car as they like wiggle their way to the back seat. It's like, OK. Yeah, she's going to. Yeah. He just jumps on wherever he can. Well, Elorath goes. Oh, my God. So for me, just to just to get give me an acrobatics check, I want to see how graceful this swan dive is into the water. OK, I want to put it out there that she's going to tie herself to the Jacob's ladder. OK, the side of the ship and then dive for the people. I love all this. How OK, how much rope did you grab?
As much as I could. Well, let's see. Let's see. It was handy. OK, give me give me give me a 5 to 10. That's a 12. Nope. OK. OK, so you grab the standard that that's that's a two. So you grabbed a standard 50 foot length of rope. OK. Does that appear like it would be enough for at least right now she moves quickly if you move quickly? Yes. OK. All right. Given that she's done this before. Uh huh. Could I have advantage on it? You know what? For your bravery, what I'm going to do is give you inspiration. OK. And you can choose to use that now if you do. OK. I like I like that.
OK. All right. So she's going to dive overboard and try and get both of them. Please work. 13. Do you want to roll with that 13? I would like to use my inspiration and try and roll again. OK. Just because now I'm curious. I'm like, oh, God, I feel like with a 13 I could get one. But if I can get higher, I might be able to get both of them. Mm hmm. So let's try that. Oh, God. OK. Oh, no. Twelve. Twelve. OK. 13. So I picture this as one like like Ella doesn't even think about it. Like you hear like man overboard. You what you realize what's going on. You're just it's like you're running and almost scoop up this rope and tie it like as you're running.
Yes. And just dive over. So, holy shit. OK. Ella Raff plummets into this water and it is ice cold. And I'm going to have you start swimming. So you're just going to be man. This water is doing everything it can to essentially drag you beneath. Like this is this water is incredibly choppy. It's ice cold like that. Just this pounding rain is just in your face. It stings. It's getting so hard. And you're going to see you're going to see Zalu and you're going to see Thorin about 25 feet away from you. Somewhere there. I want you to give me an athletics check. They're going to see you and they're going to try to swim to.
Eleven. Eleven. OK. Now, Zalu is an OK swimmer. Her people are not traditionally the best in the water, but you know, she's going to she's going to give it her all. Seventeen. Yes, girl. So she is going to keep above even in the midst of all this. She's going to keep above water and she's going to move toward. She's going to move toward Ella Raff as fast as she can. Thorin is less of a strong swimmer and will receive a negative three. Now, that's a combination of the ice cold water, her lack of upper body strength. She has asthma. So. Six. Let me let me roll for something really quickly.
No. OK, so. Zalu is going to race as as quickly as she can to Ella Raff. And I would say within just a couple of minutes, you guys are going to close the gap. Now, Thorin is still a ways away. I'd say a good, I don't know, 20 feet or so, 25 feet. Like maybe she's drifting away a little bit. The ship is still in motion, which means you have a very, very, very limited amount of time. I'd say seconds to either brace yourselves and hold on tight because the ship is going to jerk you back or try to get to Thorin. I have some I'd like to jump in if possible. Please, Merrick.
So how far away from the edge of the ship, you said about 25 feet or something like that, roughly. Well, from where Ella Raff is, I'd say it's probably closer to 40, 45 from. All right. Well, he's going to try. He's he's going to pull out a piece of cork from a from a pouch and powder it up between his fingers and sort of put it between his hands and then blow it into his hands. And he's going to try to cast Water Walk on Thorin, which should allow her to be able to walk on the water. Oh, that'll do it. As if it were harmless, solid ground. OK, now, how is that normally cast?
It's a is it a one willing creature thing? It's it's simply one action. The spell grants the ability to move across any liquid surface up to 10 willing creatures. You can see that I would imagine unless she has a death wish, would be willing to do such a thing. Oh, God. OK. What's the range? That's the problem. It's 30 feet. Oh. Here's the thing. I would say you're within range of Salud and Elarath. So I don't want to set a precedent here. Yeah. Here's what I'll allow you to do. We trade mostly in in cause and effect. There's a penalty for action. So I'll let you attempt to cast the spell beyond range.
But I'm going to ask for three stressed. I. Oh, shit. Fuck. I don't think there's a choice. I mean, I think this is in like you said, this is like within seconds, like this just like go. I don't think that he would think twice about it. I think it would just be a matter of like with everyone within the water, within whatever range he can possibly muster, thinking about, you know, every divine action that he could possibly pull into his body. It's going to be pushed out and he's not going to think twice about it. So I don't think there's a choice. All right.
America's going to cast Waterwalk. I want you to do me a favor and roll a flat D20 as long as it's not a five or under. You're going to hit everybody just fine. Oh, my God. Jesus Christ. Oh, no. That's a twenty. That is a quick go. OK, so everybody in the water right now is going to instantly start to climb out of it awkwardly, like through your action of swimming. It's like, oh, shit. Like it almost solidifies. It feels like it anyway. It's a weird feeling. But you're all going to I'd say there's going to be a split second. Really? What the hell is happening?
And then just cling to each other. Now, Eloraf is tied off to the ship. And I would imagine you're all just going to cling on for dear life, right? Yes. She's going to she's going to make sure that like she could she gets to Thorin. Like now that she could run to her, she's going to grab Zalu, make sure that she's with her. So they're all together. Gotcha. And kind of run in the same direction as the boat. But then also try to get out to Thorin and grab her. And then, yes, hold on to the rope and then start making their way back to the ship. OK, so you're going to get to each other just in time for the ship to start pulling in the opposite direction.
So there's that lurch backward and all of you are just clinging on for dear life. Thorin's probably like, ah, just like just the she doesn't do well in the water. And or she probably was like everyone's to all fairly like, Romeo, help us. Like that type of thing. Just trying to like, yeah, I was rooting for you just now for a second. Just a little she sees it as like a helpful, like a puff, the magic dragon creature could help everybody out. So, yeah, I would imagine the crew back on on the ship is just pulling back on. It's a come on, get her, get her back over.
And that's going to be happening. And this storm is going to ever so slowly start to taper off. Those waves are going to get a little less like they produce down to like 20 foot waves, 15 foot waves. Like it's nasty. But you guys can deal with it. The worst is over now. There were some failures, like some nasty failures on this. So what's going to happen is I'm going to go around the table and ask people to to roll some damage for the ship. And we're going to do this five times. Are you ready? Ready. Iris, this may be a good time to tell you that this fancy grounds disconnected again.
And I've got to try to get back on nonstop. You hold on. We'll just ask everybody else to. I don't know what it is. It might be a driver thing. I don't know. Look into it. Iris, give me two d10. Two d10. All right. One, two. Is higher better? 17 damage to the ship. Oh, shit. That answers that. Merit, give me two d10. That was great. You're doing awesome. D10. Two d10. Two d10. Okey dokey. Nine. Not bad. There's give me two d10. 13. Oh, man. Abilene. Two d10. Yes. Three. Well done. That's great. And finally, Captain Ella. Do me a favor. Two d10. 15. Sorry, guys. Stop being sorry. Now.
It happens. I know. Least I roused people with the promise of beer. Dude, you did more than that. You saved lives, man. That was a hero move out there. You just jumped into a storm. Oh, that's the thing is like she didn't even think twice about that. Yeah, she is. Because she's like, fuck. Didn't even think twice about it. 57 damage to the ship. You're OK. So you have taken a beating. Like your ship is bloodied, let's say if you're OK. And as this is starting to calm down, I picture you guys are just soaking wet. You're just like, oh, God. Oh, Iris is still running around, probably asking for help.
It's like, help me. Help me get this person over here. We're going to get him down to sick bay, that type of thing. And you're going to treat some of these really nasty wounds like people probably got cut open. Like there's probably some really nasty stuff. And just as things are starting to calm down and the sky is still gray and you're watching that ship behind you get pounded. Like they're going through the same thing you were going through as soon as it'll be tapering off for them too soon. You're going to hear a bell. Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding.
You heard it a little bit during the storm, but this is like frantically someone's just, oh, oh. And it's Auggie. Uh oh. Auggie's going to scream down. Pirate ship! Fuck! God damn it. And ahead of you, you're going to see a nasty looking gunship. Clearly, clearly a pack of water bandits barreling down toward you. Aqua thieves? Aqua thieves. H2O ne'er-do-wells, if you will. Oh yeah, right. Oh hell. I think that's a good time for us to stop for the night. You can't stop there. We almost died, Jason. You did. Poor ship. Oh my God. Now, do you want the good news? Yes. Yes.
You have all leveled up. Yay. There you go. Yay. Fantastic. That, that was stellar, stellar bravery there, Lisa. Well done, Lisa. Sorry, that was fantastic. I'm not really sorry. I just feel like I'm like, oh no. I always feel like that when I'm like, do anything in the forefront because I'm like, oh no. But I'm like, like really though, she wouldn't have thought twice about it because she did save that guy back on the river. So, this is what I do. I tie myself up and I jump in the river. This is just a big salty one. We may want to get you a new hobby. Maybe. But don't feel bad for doing things in the forefront.
Like everyone's going to get a chance. Yeah. I was going to call a bit more on Bree, but I don't think Fantasy Grounds wanted you to play tonight. No, apparently not. I'm still trying to get to, I tried to reinstall it, but I can't uninstall it. So, oh no. Oh, that was you responding to a thing I sent you earlier. Yeah, no, honestly, it might just be a, like we need to restart Elle's computer. It might be that. Yeah. And the thing that's frustrating is because I can't contact you guys through Skype as a group and I don't have Fantasy Grounds, I wasn't able to tell anyone what was going on or even get to react to the things that were happening in the game in chat like I normally do.
But you have a microphone? Yeah, but I wasn't in the scene. Oh, come on. I wasn't in the scene. You can still react. That's against the rules. No, it's not. We also have Facebook. What are you talking about? Yeah, everyone's going, everyone's like gasping at rolls and stuff like that's totally allowed. Now, if you were like, this is the disembodied voice of Clara, you can't astral project, but yeah, you could talk. Jeez. Todes. I was also trying to figure this out the entire fucking time. I know it was being a real dick. Yeah. Oh my God. Well, I'm going to go ahead and let everybody go.
You all did incredibly and oh, we're in the thick of it now. I can't wait. Oh, yeah. I already have ideas. Do we get our first battle? My only hope is like, like you said, Bre, they want ships that are like floating and not sinking. We already looked pretty bad. I don't know because like it seems like these guys, if they do engage with us at all, they're the type of pirates who want the ship to be sinking because then we're busy with other stuff. So we'll see. Maybe they're just maybe they're not even pirates. Maybe Auggie got it wrong. Maybe they're nice, nice people who want to help.
I say we get a big sign and we say don't get us, but we draw a big arrow. They have a really cool sword on their boat. Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I was like treasure over there. We'll give you half of our weird morphine stuff if you just don't attack us. I wonder if we are in the middle of a battle and it's long enough if the royals would actually stop and help. Man, we really hope you guys enjoyed today's episode. Just like I said at the top of the show, we did add a bunch of new milestones over on patreon.com/danddr. There's Rob's card game, which we really want to sit and play.
There was there was a bunch of stuff. So we hope to hit those eventually. Right now we're kind of putting our nose to the grindstone and working on the book. And there's tons of updates about that on Patreon, on the Kickstarter. If you go to that Kickstarter page, the campaign, you could either preorder the book or check out the newest updates for that. We've been doing video team meetings every Wednesday or so. And that has been well, the entire thing's just been a huge process. So thank you for being patient and we hope you guys have been enjoying a look behind the scenes and what it takes to make something like that.
We've also been releasing a new shirt every single month on our T-public store. This month it was the Sheebs stat block. So that's going to be art straight for the book with the actual stat blocks for Sheebs and people really, really dig that. I like the look of the yellow too. So we'll be back next week with a brand new episode. Thank you guys so much. And until then, make sure to spread the word about the show. Give us a review on iTunes. Tell your friends and family. Blibbity blobbity blah. We hope you guys have an awesome week and we'll see you next time.
