Argh 3, episode 30 of the DNR Podcast is brought to you today by Hank Green's new book, A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor, which comes out July 7th. This is a sequel and conclusion to his first book, An Absolutely Remarkable Thing, which is the story of a young woman thrown into fame during a global crisis of contagious dreams and mysterious robots.

It's on hardcover ebooks, audiobooks, and is available wherever books are sold. The Library Journal's starred review said, "Throughout this adventurous, witty, and compelling novel, Green delivers sharp social commentary on the power of social media and both the benefits and horrendous consequences that follow when we give too much of ourselves to technology." Again, that's A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor, and it's available July 7th. Previously for Group A, after losing their youngest party member, who may have been a tag along but was still under the group's care in Clifford, who was only 12 years old, the group tried to pick up the pieces and say goodbye.

As they were doing so, they were approached by an older woman named Sable. While she was welcoming and hospitable, the group started to pick up that she may not be all that she seemed. In fact, she was actually the god of death in disguise. She offered the group a deal, take care of the vampires in the city of Donhurst and the Countess herself, and she would do her best to help the party in any way she could, including Masoka and Mattie, who were bitten by vampires and faced a very uncertain future. The group took the deal, and that's where we pick up things today.

Let's do that thing where we go around the table and introduce ourselves. I'm Jason. I'm the Dungeon Master going around the table with Michael. Hey, I'm Michael, and I play Ambon, the-- I forgot the name of the god. [LAUGHTER] Good start, Michael. Wow, you forgot your god. That's-- man. Well, he's been the one with a long fantasy name or anything. Michael. Let's take those three levels away. [LAUGHTER] I didn't take the memory feat. Raven Queen. The Blessed by the Raven Queen, Half-Elf Wizard. Nailed it. See, first try. First try. And Susan. Hey, I'm Susan. I play Madeline, Ryoin, the human cleric of a monitor who also thinks the Raven Queen is pretty cool.

Just all right by her. And Robert. Hey, I'm Rob. I'm playing the Dragonborn, Paladin of Alverin, Swashbuckler, Rogue, Moonlighting for the Raven Queen. And I run a food cart downtown, you know, like every third Thursday. You got to diversify these days. I don't want to see your business cards. Jesus. It's more of like a business-- like a business 8 and 1/2 by 11. Yeah. Is the role of this. And James. Hey, James. I play Masoka, the Half-Elf Rogue. And I'll just leave it at that. And Xavier. Hi, I'm Xavier. I play Donovan, the human Paladin of Volandra. And Kelsey.

I'm Kelsey. And I play Aster, the Elf, Rogue Fighter who ate their cookie despite somebody trying to get theirs. Also a quick update. I'm at 312 hours on Animal Crossing. OK, I got to check mine. Hold on. Jesus, god. It'll be the quickest thing. It'll be the quickest thing. It's an important part of the introduction. I forgot. This is our monthly intervention thing. Fun Monday fact. Did you know our intros take on average four minutes? Oh, you're-- All right. I'm only at 285, so I'm amateur hour here. Oh, I platinumed Final Fantasy XV. Ooh. That's impressive. Whoa.

Don't say anything. I still haven't finished it. Oh, it's OK. My son broke my switch. Oh. OK. Wow. That's rough. Yeah. OK. Everybody out there, welcome to this 43-minute episode of Dungeons & Dragons. It's going to be a roller coaster. The behind the scenes is super long, though. Yeah. If you're not on our Patreon, you're really not getting this episode. We got the three levels each of us. Like, what did you get? Most of that was Michael Pollak. We refilled it in Fantasy Grounds. I don't know. That was-- It's not true. Last time on the show. You guys know what happened last time on the show.

You had a long talk with the Raven Queen. You took up a divine mission to fight the Countess. And essentially, she gave you everything that she could to give you a fighting chance. You're still in the town of Durnhollow. Maddie and Masoka are still going to die, but they will come back. So that's cool. You're working with the nets, basically. Sweet. There's a lot to do, because you guys don't work in a vacuum. You have friends and family and thoughts and feelings and all that stuff. What do you want to do here? What's everyone thinking? OK, let's do this. You leave the shack, and you walk back out into the cool night air.

You just talk to a god. What's everyone thinking? What's everyone feeling? Never talked to a god before. Don't know how to test this, because it was true. But this is also-- yeah. I'm going to look over at everyone else. Is there a bit of skepticism there? Are you just like, well, is she, though? Is it-- Well, we've already-- has Ede-- that cookie resulted in anything yet already, or has that just ate the cookie and-- I think it happened when we walked out the door. That's what we described last time. We got our cool armor and weapon changes and upgrades. Yeah, so definitely there's a definite physical manifestation.

But mentally, I mean, for any spellcaster, there'd be this new knowledge, right? Just kind of this innate, like, oh, I could do this. Like, you know, you just kind of see it in your head. Cool. In that case, it's like, A, this feels like cheating. Well, from a wizard's point of view, because it's always about study, and studio's like, oh, it's now just there, which wizards are all about cheating anyway, so it's cool. So you're like, oh, this is cool. But then it's like, well, was it a god, or just a real powerful wizard? But it's also like, this is pretty interesting.

So I'm still-- Amven's still processing. Yeah. Maddie would be, like, vibrating with energy. Like, the biggest grin, and whoever is closest to her, I'm guessing, Vazoga. As soon as they all step out, and you could feel the change, she is just going to turn to the group, have a smile, and then just-- and then just hugs whoever is close to her. And then she's going to let go. That was the Raven Queen. Oh my god. Oh, gosh. Oh, gods. Guys. And Donovan, as soon as you hug Masoka, just from the side, Donovan comes in for an embrace and hugs both of you two, like just bear hugs the two of you, and goes like, yeah, Maddie.

It's not that I doubted you before, but nothing's ever been more true. I get it. I get it now. And Maddie's going to squeeze you tighter. That just happened. And happy tears are coming down her face. Masoka doesn't be happy for you. I think to him, there was never really a question of gods existing or not or that. He's super pumped. He got to meet one. He's talked to another. But it's all kind of bittersweet for him, I think, because he feels really responsible for Clifford. And I think that's weighing pretty bad on him right now. So he'll smile, but it's a forced smile.

He'll try to be happy for Maddie and Donovan and everything that's going on. Are we like back out in the alleyway where we fought? I would imagine, yeah. OK, yeah. Yeah, Asher's going to walk over to where Clifford is. Maddie's going to see you move and like start to jump up and be like, and then she'll see where you're walking to and go, oh. And she's going to take the handkerchief that the Raven Queen had and just like tuck it away. She's that's going to be a prized possession, but she will start to sober up seeing the scene. Well, I think I think Misoka would also go over to Clifford and sort of kneel down beside him and just say, I'm sorry, kid.

I took this away, and he'll hold Topo and kind of set you up for failure there. So that's on me. We should bury him, right? That's-- and Asher's kind of like looking at like Misoka and then at Maddie. Maddie's going to kneel down next to Misoka and put a hand on his shoulder. I mean, I could still try. I still feel something there. I could try to bring him back. But we did just meet the god of death, and I think she'll make sure Clifford is OK. He'll start nodding. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, he's probably better there. We'll make it up to him when we put the countess in the ground.

And we don't forget him. That's the important part. There's a-- I think there's a cemetery here. He deserves a place in the city. He deserves to be buried with other people. Let's wait just before dawn. Let's arrange something in the morning. We should get him in the ground before the sun rises, right? Just before. Yeah. And Maddie's hand is going-- on Misoka's shoulder is going to turn into that half hug, like across his shoulders, and just like kind of hold him because, you know. Astra's going to kind of like pause and squint a little bit, like as if you're like trying to remember something, and then look over at Donovan and just wait back by the-- was that Trent?

That was with you? Yeah. I mean, I guess he didn't hide well enough after we left him. The fang was on their way to just snatch him up, bring him back as a snack over at the countess. We should probably talk to him at some point. Yeah. He'll look at Maddie and Misoka. Take all the time you need. I'll head back to the harlot. Anyone who wants to come with me, feel free to join me, but take all the time you need. And I guess find a spot for Clifford in the meantime. I'll go with you, Donovan. Likewise. I did not know the boy well. Perhaps this is best for people who were close with him.

Donovan nods. Master, are you coming? Hopefully Trent's still there. After it looks a bit torn, but then they'll nod and just-- yeah, yeah. Well, because they want to give Maddie and Misoka some privacy together, it's kind of their thoughts. And we'll come back to take care of him. And Donovan will start to kind of like lead the group away, kind of like putting both his elbows around Anvin and Esther's shoulders and legs. All right, let's go. It's a bit of an uneven shot. Disjointed. And even Donovan kind of feels not taller suddenly, but certainly he's standing much-- his back is much straighter.

He's been kind of slumping in the past few days after all that's happened. He got more and more moody, more and more just like-- I don't know, not emo, but Spiderman-- not Spiderman 3. That's the level. Certainly affected. But now it's kind of like as if we were back to the first time we all met, like more confidence, more-- even despite all that's happening, he's kind of like can't help himself but smile. Well, now you've been blessed by a god. I mean, it's-- That'll put a peck in your step. Yeah. I mean, Mal, Esther is kind of the opposite. Like they're like just currently just still sort of in shock and definitely dissociating a bit and not-- there's just a lot going on.

It's a bit overwhelming. Their world view is shook. Yeah, a little bit. Yeah, Donovan can kind of like give you a squeeze on their shoulder. So you're prepping Clifford and everything and we're leaving Maddie and Misoko alone. While they're alone, what does the party want to do here in town? Like I guess there's this sense of like, OK, we got to prep for what's coming. We get-- like what would be the first thing? Like Skellenar strikes me, one, as a pretty cut and dry kind of person. Like I don't know what Donovan would be thinking here. Rob, do you want to go first?

Yeah, I can. I mean, one of the things going through Skellenar's head is just like he kind of-- before he joined the party, he kind of had a variety of quests that he was considering taking on, but now it's definitely the vampire one. So he's thinking like, oh man, like is there-- is there anywhere I could go in town to just like make sure I know everything I can about vampires and then shop for things that could be actually really helpful and effective? Aubrey's probably the town for that more than-- but yeah, there's always like, OK, it depends on what you're looking.

Are we looking for like holy water and that type of stuff? Because that's usually-- you could totally get that. There's a question in the chat. Can you voice that, please? I'm sorry. No! Can we make our own holy water? At this level? Yeah. OK, so we just get a big bucket of water. And we dump it on the counter. What a world, what a world. I can get into this stuff a little bit later. I just don't like-- never mind, that's later stuff. So what's the process for making holy water? It's a ritual. It takes about 10 minutes. And you could do a finite amount in 10 minutes, but you could definitely weaponize a decent amount of water in 10 minutes.

You can make some flasks of holy water. Yeah, Skalnar would set out to do that. I suppose he'd go looking for research material first, just so-- and unfortunately, there's not really-- well, OK, so I'm with Donovan. And who else? Anvin. Anvin, Donovan Anvin. OK, so yeah, I'll voice this rather. So while we are preparing, I was thinking to myself, that last fight, it is an understatement to say it went poorly. We need as much knowledge and preparation as possible to make this battle go well. We definitely have advantages that we did not-- man, my voice is going like Scottish Irish something or other instead of Skalnar.

Conflicted. Blah, blah, blah, blah. Yeah, I'm trying to work it out. Keep picturing Chekov in my head from Star Trek. Yeah, nuclear vessels. So I was thinking, perhaps we should go somewhere and make sure we have as much good information as possible and then establish some advantages. Yes? Well, that's some-- we think alike, Skalnar. I think we're going to-- I think everything from here is going to be progress, and we're going to get better for sure. We're going to go see the man on the inside at the Hanist Arlut, Trent, the guy we saved. He was with the Fang, and he's certainly seen a bunch of stuff.

So he probably can tell us about, if not the Countess, about the Fang itself and how we can possibly divide and conquer them. This Trent, is he some sort of vampire expert? Is he brilliant? Is he experienced? Perhaps you should bring him with us to fight. No, I don't think so. I think he hid in the sewer for a couple of weeks. Oh. Yeah, but he knows that sewer, which might be our best bet in. So he might have street smarts. Well, he managed to get out of the city full of vampires, so to be-- If anything, if anything, we'll get the most we can out of him. He owes us a couple of times.

Yeah, you'll see. It is not nothing. It's worthwhile. But we've been to Donhurst, so we can sit down and talk strategy. Yeah, we ought to talk about a lot of stuff. But yeah, Trent's more of like a escort class material, you feel? So would it be most efficient for myself and maybe one other to go and do reading while the other two talk to Trent? Or would you prefer we stay together? I mean, the more ground we can cover in the shorter amount of time is probably the better, right? I got to-- he points out Anvin. We've got a good reader here. So if you've got some reading to do, I'd bring this one along.

Yeah, just got to find a place to actually get that knowledge. I'm planning to ask around. Yeah, I'm down for-- if we could find a weakness, that'd be amazing. Or at least some kind of clue to a weakness, would you? More than just a blessing. Jason, is it-- there's no-- yes, I keep forgetting there's no street-wise check in 5E. What? I guess, would we need to roll, or could we just ask someone in the know, like, hey, where's the best vampire material repository? I always use Wisdom, just because that's basically you looking around the world and your ability to pick up on stuff.

So I always use that for street-wise. OK. Well, OK. I was actually just looking over a skill list. Trying to think of what I could do with investigation. So I'm kind of good at that. But you just want a flat Wisdom check? For now, yeah. Like, you're going to talk to Trent, too. Yeah. Yeah, OK. Let's see, that's my Wisdom save. I need a Wisdom check. There we go. Or I guess, Amven, do you want-- I have a plus 2. Do you have a-- I feel like we're overthinking this. Oh, yeah, I'm throwing it. I'm throwing it. I'm throwing it. Here it goes. I only got a plus 2 as well.

That's amazing. 15. 15. Yeah. There you go. Fantastic. I'll save it for the reading. So OK. Tell me exactly what you're looking for here. You're talking to people. You're kind of getting-- Like, well, oh, like, how are we going about it? No, no, no, what you are exactly looking for. Like, what are you-- OK, what's the question you're asking people? OK. I'm looking for two things. OK. Empirical, like, empirical high quality vampire lore about weaknesses and workings and stuff we can use. And any histories and stories that are specifically about the Countess and her rule or behavior or habits that we can exploit.

So if she's in history books or anything. Oh, yeah, she's been around long enough to-- Yeah, yeah, yeah. So like, lore about her or maybe terrible ways we can exploit her emotional attachment to things or, I don't know, make it painful. Yeah. Wow. So OK, let's do this. So you're asking around town, and you're getting little vampire factoids, right? Because this town is close enough to Aubrey that there was a problem in Aubrey for a long time. And when word got back to them that it's like, yeah, they're letting the vampires just live there, naturally the hairs on the back of their neck start to stand up.

It's like, uh-oh. Like, is that-- are they taking over? Or is there peace? Is there-- so I think a lot of people are just kind of feeling out the situation. A lot of people, it's like, OK, I know a ward that'll keep vampires from coming into my establishment if I enchant it. And I'm going to pay a spellcaster to do that for me because I don't want to get bit. So sadly, the honest heart of it didn't do that. Now, in the midst of your investigation, someone's going to overhear that you're asking about this. And next to a well-lit establishment, this is the residential area, you're going to hear someone from just in the shadows, pssst, hey.

Uh, Skal'narr will not say anything immediately, but look in the direction of the voice. And this bald man is going to emerge from the shadows. And he's going to walk up to Skal'narr, and he's very shifty. Like, he's looking around his shoulder, and he's, like, he's looking around. Can you hear these people partying? Is that what he asks me? No, no. Hey. You want to go to a fun party? Yeah, man. Can you hear that? Oh my god. OK. No, I do not hear what's catching on. OK. I'm sorry. It's getting louder, and it's like, god, I don't want that to pick up in the recording.

Sorry. Hey. You look like a fun guy. He's being really annoyed with partiers. He takes care of the castles for me. I live next to a tavern, and man, I never hear the end of it. God. He is going to approach. I heard you asking about vampires. Oh no. I know that voice. Oh my god. No. Can I roll a flat d20 to see if I avoid this guy and this doesn't happen? I mean, you could ignore him. You could just say, no thanks. Don't want any. I want to make an insight check to see if I can tell how not credible he is. He said, how? Basically like. I heard you're looking at that.

So, OK. OK. Sorry. That's metagaming. I will feel it out, and then I will make the insight check. OK. Boy, howdy, we're going to get there. OK, so he just said I heard you asking about vampires. Yes. Yes, vampires in general and the countess specifically. We're doing research. Well, that's very smart to do so, Fred. Morgan Osgood. And he's going to he's going to hold out his hand. He's going to shake it, sure. And he's going to he's going to grip it like probably a little bit too tightly, like both hands, like kind of shake for just a little bit too long. I've been investigating this area for some time now, and I have to tell you, no one's heeded my words of wisdom.

And now look where we are. We have a whole city under siege and Aubrey is slowly being corrupted from the inside. I like to think that VanVen is like he tilts his head and like, huh? By by vampires. What else? You know, they're actually allowing vampires to live in the town with real people. I warned against it. I did. No one listens to Morgan. I mean, the ones who live in town are. Behaved and not causing trouble. I certainly we dealt with some vampires today ourselves who were of the more troubling sort, but anyway, anyway, we're getting off topic. Morgan, what do you know about vampires that could potentially help us?

You seem you seem to dislike them, which leads me to believe you might be useful to our cause. I don't trust them, friend. And any enemy to a vampire? Well. You're OK in my book. You are you going after the Countess? He's going to kind of look around like, huh? Like kind of ducking around. We are not inclined to be friendly to her, if that's what you're asking the specifics I would rather keep to myself. Oh, I get you. I get you. OK, OK. You saw our goons here earlier, huh? We did. We are the ones who dispatched them. His eyes are going to light up. Oh, really?

Yes, really. I did not lie to you just now. It's very important to me. Who else is so it's it's it's it's Skalnar and Anthony. I think Astar and Donovan went to go find Trent. That's what I thought. OK, I just want to make sure. I feel bad because Rob just lost a fight on last Bastion where he got a party member he didn't want. And I'm anti I'm becoming anti recruitment in general. Let's bring in PC along on our happy wacky adventure. Dead liability. It's better than us dying. Come on. Yeah. Turn the party into a freaking clown car. Well, all right. Hi. OK, OK, OK.

We could do something here with this if you if you're that talented at dispatching those things, then you might be the people I've been looking for. Come with me and he's going to beckon you into this dark alley. I'm going to look at Skalnar. I thought we were asking him. And then looks over at Skalnar to see if we move or if we don't. Do you know of any better lead off the top of your head? If not, we can follow this local. Off the top of my head, I'll have to follow this local as you put it. Skalnar will shrug and lead on. So as you walk into this alley, he's going to light up this lantern.

It's kind of sitting on a crate, but like he's going to keep the light very low. So you could just kind of see features illuminated and stuff like that. And he's going to start frantically pacing. OK, OK, there's so much I have to tell you. I have been doing research for years on these things. Did you know that there's an international cabal and more of these things are being trucked over in boats? Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. It's coming. Now can I make the insight? Yes, absolutely. That's the moment. That's because if it's true, never follow Morgan to my location.

Yes, you're like, I am. You're just the result is he he he believes what he's saying 100 percent. That's yes. He is convinced of what he's not trying to lie to you. You OK, there's a desperation in his voice like the world has ignored him and it's at their own peril. Right. Like this guy is 10,000 percent like. Yeah, so yeah, that you're going to pick up there's a desperation in his voice and at a certain point he's going to reach into this leather vest that he has and he's going to set an object down on this crate and it looks it looks spherical, but it's covered with this this this.

God. It looks it looks like a like a like a hanky or something like that that's covering. What is this thing under the under the handkerchief? Oh, this this is the answer to your prayers, sir. You should be thanking your lucky stars that you ran into Morgan. OK, may I lift the handkerchief or must you do it for dramatic effect? He's going to squint at you like you're not taking this seriously and he's going to just kind of uncover it. And there's this light purple orb sitting here and it is once the handkerchief is kind of removed, there's kind of this like glow to it.

Right. And it is there's kind of this this fringe to it, like it looks like it's been cracked open or something like that. You can tell that there was this like this gold encasement, something like that at some point. And he he is going to just kind of like pull this handkerchief back like, tada, like, there you go. Like that. Then I will sense magic from this purple orb or if it was in my head, seeing color, some like fruit and saying woo hoo or is it like something magical? Hit me with our contract. I'll give you some deets. Yeah, this is this is the real deal.

This is the real deal with sex appeal. This thing is this thing's dripping with magic. Right. So right off the bat, you are going to like you're going to pick up some real power coming off this thing. And he's going to he's like he's going to look around like as not to shout because his default is kind of to shout. This is the orb of light. I acquired it about two months ago. And I've been waiting, just waiting for a shot at those things. So I was I was waiting for I thought Amven was going to. Yeah, I was trying to think of something that doesn't make it sound like I'm mitigating.

I'm thinking about it. I don't know. Tell him Donovan needs it. I cannot believe it. What? Sorry. I just. OK, well, now can you join the party? Can we just take the thing from him? Well, this is Stormor percolating here. Sjalnar will just ask, OK, what does it do? Well, what it did was was a magical focus type of thing. It was specifically designed to kill bloodsuckers like this, the undead that just eradicate them. But I made a modification. See, if you crack the shell on it and you open it up, it's going to constantly emit this this is this radiance. It's going to keep them back.

Any low level bloodsuckers, any low level fiends, it's just going to push them back constantly and it's going to buy people time. If you head in with this thing. If you've got a team together. You should be able to walk right up to her. Sjalnar looks over at Amvin and says, does any of this check out or is this a crazy man? Do I notice, like, cracks or anything? Can I look at it without touching, but like see if... Yeah, yeah, yeah. Give me a perception. Perception. OK. Oh, yeah, you're going to pick up a bunch of stuff. So, OK. While this is completely spherical and clearly there is this is an artifact at this point, like you're it's like, wow, holy.

OK, you can you can tell that there's some there's some juice coming off this thing. You can also tell that this has been greatly tampered with and was probably much more pristine until this wild eyed psychopath got a hold of it. And it looks like what he did was he took a hammer and a screwdriver and just whacked at it over and over again until he wrenched the the the casing away from it and just cracked it open. So it doesn't work as a focus anymore. And he essentially... A kind word would be alter. A less kind word would be ruined. It looks to be more unstable, much like its current holder.

Does that mean that we can... Is there like that sense of of anything from it like leaking? Like, do we get any feeling or sense from being around it or anything? Or is it just pulsating? Kind of a dull pulsating. Like it's just like that Geiger counter thing. It's like you can feel it. Do I think that if hearing his idea of what would happen versus like what I know is what he's saying on the level, like would it really do that? Or am I thinking there's like a 50 percent chance it does nothing? If you're giving it odds, like you're you're it will definitely make the undead uncomfortable.

Definitely. How absolutely effective it would be of keeping low level undead at a distance. You're not entirely sure that like basically more study would have to be done. You know, that's like it's like, OK, yeah, that should totally do something. But I don't know exactly how affect. Are we talking five feet, 20 feet? Like what are we talking like? Are you going to burst into flames if they get too close? So they are they just going to be like squinting when they buy this like that type of thing. Like you're not exactly sure. OK. Well, look over at Skellmer.

At least something to aid us. Effectiveness is questionable, but might be helpful. And and I whisper over to Skellmer, I think it's better whisper. I think it's better if we take this away from him in general. Skellner will give you just one single sharp nod and then look back at Morgan. Morgan, we believe your item shows promise. You seem committed to helping helping with this vampire issue. May we take the item with us and see if it is helpful to our cause? Wanna hold on a second? How do I know you're on the level? You've got a team or is it just you two?

I always feel after every time he talks, like almost like Skellner and him and look at each other. Every sentence is an exasperation. All right, for the moment, Skellner will play nice with him. Yes, we have a group. There are six of us. We're very competent. We ate cookies recently. He is going to grab Skellner by the shoulders. This is very important. What flavor? Were they? Oh, yeah. Skellner looks dim and like matches his seriousness just to like, for the sake of being stuck with this dude for a moment. Be gone, Sandeese. He's going to give you the most solemn nod very slowly.

It's like, all right. And he's going to hand you the orb. And Skellner like takes it in his hand and he looks at it and he nods and he looks over at him and he's, this is good. I did not have to make this man piss himself to get the orb. Nice job. Nice job. Oh, I don't piss easily, son. Now, that's what they all say. Look, when you're done dealing with the Countess, we could take care of the gnomes. But right now there's a bigger threat afoot. Morgan, one crisis at a time. Against solemn nod. You get it. You're on the level. Yes, that's what is happening here.

He is going to sink back into the alley. And just kind of take off around the corner. Skellner just watches him leave and without looking over to Envin says, I'd say we should inform the town guard about him, but they probably already know. I think there's a good chance that's true. He is conspicuous. It's a puppet master is what he is. On the bright side, we now have something to investigate specifically. And he passes the orb over to Envin. Is it wrapped in the thing or is it just the orb itself? Oh, there's a handkerchief. Yeah. Yeah, we should probably wait to research this until we're on our way or in a place letting everyone else know what they...

Potentially, Mattie might even know what this is. So we show it to our allies first, yes? Yes, we should. Should we attempt any reading or has this sidetracked that original agenda? We could check one more place or so or ask for a real library. But last time I looked for a library, I didn't get... Well, I didn't find anything useful, but maybe asking a guard? Skellner will nod and look for someone authoritative, see if they can give directions to just like local library that might have these topics. Thanks. Let's jump back over to... Let's do Mattie and Misoka.

Okay. How are you guys feeling? Glad we had a little bit of a break with technical difficulties or else I would have been laughing too hard to do this. Are we doing the burial thing or are we going to scare the fuck out of him? Where should we pick up? I mean, you guys have a lot to talk about. Do you want to jump ahead to like, it's like you guys have given him a burial and it's respectful type of thing. I think we're preparing the burial scene, but we all wanted to meet up as a group for the actual burial before dawn. Okay. I think that's what Johnny wanted.

So this is just you guys catching your breath in the alley and just, I mean, you're getting ready for a big change of life type of thing. So I think you guys just needed a minute. Okay. Sorry, I gotta get into the frame of mind now. Yeah, I was sobering up. That was all too funny. This is going to be depressing. Yeah. See, you followed up with funny. It's a compliment sandwich. It's a funny sandwich. You promise? Yeah. I mean, it's Trent. I mean, come on. Okay. I can't wait for him to join the party again. Anyway, go ahead. Jason, we have to get a character. God, no.

Child has died and go. So maybe they've prepared and respectfully placed him where he needs to go. And then Maddie and Misoka are just standing there. And as the silence just like hangs over them, Maddie will look up and say to Misoka, so we're dying. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I'm not really too sure what to do with that right now. I think too much has happened in the last day. I haven't really caught up to it yet. Yeah. And Clifford, I mean, I wanted to save him. You know, I just when I got wasted and I should have been there for him. And I don't think I had the right to do that, to take him away and promise him or myself a better life for him.

How, what kind of life do you think you would have led? If he had stayed with the Countess? Do you think? Well, I think even in the short amount of time he was with us, he had free will. He got to get out. He wasn't abused. He wasn't told to stay silent and then suddenly hit. Yeah. Yeah, he kind of kicked ass, didn't he? Yeah, he really did. I'm just trying to find a way in my head to use this for something good. I just feel terrible right now. I know. I think you have to keep in mind that you weren't the one to ruin his life. The Countess did that the second she turned him for her own whim.

You tried the best you could. And even in the end, it wasn't your fault. The Countess sent those vampires. She tore that little boy's life apart. And then took it away from him. She takes and she takes and she takes. I just wish I wasn't so hard on him. You were what he needed. He needed someone to look up to. And you can't always be the friend. You were the person in charge. You were trying to be his father. And that's... You have to be the hard person in those instances. And how could you have known what would have happened the next day? I'll make this right by him.

That's my promise. Please, I know right now there's so much. But keep in mind, you didn't do this to him. The Countess did. I think he just... I think he's pretty much just looking down at his hands right now. I think he's got a set in his head that... He'll avenge Clifford any way he can at this point. And I don't think he's even considering the fact that... Like he knows he's dying and that, but it's not really at the front of his mind. As Miss Oka's looking down his hands, Maddy's gonna put her hands on his cheeks and make him look up. And she'll look right into his eyes and say, "You'll make this right." He'll nod.

Yeah. It's... Miss Kanata's right. It's kind of the only thing I want to do right now. It's kind of the only thing all of us want to do right now. So you have us all here with you. You have me with you. Let's let everyone know... That we're ready for the burial. Okay. All right, let's catch up with Donovan and Astor. As you guys are approaching the Honest Harlot, you're gonna hear people inside partying and kind of like getting back to what they were doing. There's a cleanup effort right now because one of their windows is smashed in the front. So they're picking up glass and they're...

We did that. Yeah, that's just... Sometimes it gets rowdy. They have had to replace glass before. And as you approach the building, you're gonna see Trent quickly moving away from this building. He's getting ready. He's leaving. He is ditching. He looks like he's trying to find a horse or anything. To Astor, just... Get him? And then he'll start running after Trent and go, "Trent!" Not like he saw you and it's like, "Jeez!" It's more just like, "Okay." He just goes, "No, we're alive or the vampires are dead." Yeah. Just going for it. But he's scared. And Donovan yelling at him probably.

So that is in character, you yell. Yeah. Trent? As I start running towards him. He will absolutely poop himself. Like he is going to just kind of turn around and see... Kind of see it's you. It's like, "Okay, okay, okay." And he's gonna see if there's anyone behind you. If there's any... It's cool. It's cool, man. It's cool. It's me. Astor's with me. He's gonna kind of grab him again, by around the neck with his arm. Let's go have a drink. You're safe. You're safe forever. If you don't put yourself in any more shit. So I just love... So from Trent's perspective, he got kidnapped by vampires, then suddenly we all appeared out of nowhere to save him and then ran off after the vampires.

And now a little bit later, we're showing up again in completely different clothes. Possibly covered in blood. Yeah. This poor man. It's not over for him yet. Dude, his eyes are darting back and forth and his hands just shaking. He can't stop his hands from shaking. All right, all right, all right. I'll hold both his hands in my hands. I'll smooch him on the forehead real strong. I'll go like, "Dude, it's gonna be okay. They're all dead." We killed the vampires. Like, don't... It's okay. Cool. Yeah. Come on, come have a drink with us. Yeah, okay, okay, okay. We have to get going, though.

They're not going to stop. They're dead. They chased me all the way here. Yeah, well, we'll sit down. We'll tell you everything you need to know. I think you're going to like it. And he'll follow you inside, like very... He's just like, "Okay, okay, okay, okay." As they walk in, he'll point to the table and all the way in the back where they were when he was drinking with Masocha. Like, "My stuff's still over there. Go sit down. Wait for me. I'm going to go get drinks and then we can just talk as the rest of the group meets us again. You two start just start talking.

I'll come join you." Yeah, he'll sit down, but he's got... Look, okay, have you ever seen me try to sit and relax? Like that leg shake-y's and like fidgeting and stuff like that. He's very just like... He's constantly like... His eyes are darting around the place like, "Okay, okay." He's kind of like leaning forward and back. Just kind of... Yeah, just... Yeah. He's a bundle of nerves. So Donovan goes away in the back. I try to find Axe. The barkeep from the other day. You're not going to see him. I'm going to ask to know if he's still working. And it's like, "Oh no, he's off.

What can I do for him?" I was hoping he'd... Nah, never mind. I'll just get a... Actually, I haven't paid for my tab earlier. Just Donovan. Just keep it going. I'll have three ales. Uh, I'm sitting in my back there. Do you guys do discounts for heroes? That depends. Are you the guys who smashed our window? Because we're going to have to take that out of the discount. I don't think that was us. He looks back, "No, that wasn't us." We don't have a big red dragonborn with us. I mean... There's a dinosaur-shaped hole in our wall. And it's... Donovan looks at his silhouette and is like, "That wasn't me." Oh, okay.

No tail. All right. Drinks are coming up. Speak with Axe tomorrow when he works again. Tell him that... Donovan came back to try to work the deal he was planning on with Axe. You know, for saving the bar and everything. Anyway, he'll get it. While Donovan is staying up, Astra is going to kind of like, like, they're going to like, like, snap their fingers, like, in front of Trent's face a couple times and just, "Hey, hey, look at me." Yeah, yeah. I'm here. Um, so what have you been up to in Dirt Hollow since we left and came back? How have you been doing here?

Yeah, it's like, how's the weather? No, because what they're doing is like, they're like, "Okay, like, he is clearly like, in shock and like, not doing great. So like, get him on a different train of thought." It's like, trying to use that like tactic, like, "Hey, like, let's move the brain along to something else, maybe." Yeah. I was trying to figure out what to do next. I don't have any skills. I don't know. I don't have a job. I don't have anywhere to go. I had no home, and I thought this would be fine. Just go here. It's far enough away from Donhurst.

They're not going to follow me through the Divide. And then they came. So I don't know. I don't know. So, hmm. Is there anything you want to do? Like, if you could just do like any job, like, I don't know, anything like, hobbies or anything you've had that you enjoy doing? He's just like, "Keep away from the vampires!" He's like, okay, he's zoned out. But like, he's gonna kind of come back after, like, "Any honest work? I'll do it. Farmer, blacksmith, whatever. I'll do it. It's fine. I'm done. I'm done with this life. I hate it. I regret everything. And he's gonna like reach out and kind of like grab Astor with me.

I am sorry. I am. I'm sorry. I get it. I'm paying for what I did, and I'm sorry, but I can't do anything about that. Listen, listen, listen. You're not gonna... We're gonna find some people that are going to Aubrey or Winterhaven or the opposite direction, and you're gonna go with them and find a farm or something to work at, okay? We'll figure out the details later, but right now, if you don't have to worry about them, the people that are coming after you and stuff, like, I've been where you are, okay? And trust me, I know what it's like, and it doesn't seem like it now, but you're gonna get to a spot where you're not gonna have to be constantly looking over your shoulder and we're gonna help make that happen, okay?

He's gonna give you several vigorous head nods real fast. Okay, okay. Now let's get you some water, and they look over and see Donovan getting ale. Yeah, I'm right there. You turn your head, he's there with like three huge mugs and just slams it on the table. He's gonna grab this big ass tankard and just like... Do you ever watch a squirrel eat both hands and just chugging this down? Yeah, Aster just looks at Donovan, just like, what are you doing? And Donovan kind of like looks down at Trent drinking, kind of like... I was like, yes, yes, I'm proud of you.

Drink the whole ale. And he'll raise his mug and he'll do the prayer he did last time before drinking, but instead of amen, he'll say like, cheers to Alondra and he'll just down it. And then he sits down with you three. Now you two. Okay, so Trent, I don't know how much catching up you two have done, but you're free. You're a free man. You're free to do whatever you want now. Although I would have a favor to ask you. But it will lead you far away from here. So you might be interested. Yeah, we could talk about details and stuff tomorrow. Maybe when we're not all dealing with a lot of things that just happened.

But yeah, I mean, we're going to be leaving again. And yeah, I guess leaving any last words or anything with you might be a good bet. I don't know. Is that what you're going for, Donnie? Something like that. We were supposed to report back to Winterhaven about our findings and Donnerhurst and everything, but we got a change of plans. We're going back to Donnerhurst. Oh, he'll stop drinking. But not you. You're not a party member. Don't worry. We wouldn't bring you back there. So I'd like you to deliver a message for us to Winterhaven. If you hop on a caravan or something, like don't go by yourself.

The road's dangerous, but I mean, there's plenty of ways to travel safely. I'm sure. Just report to the council there. When Avent comes back, we'll give you all the paperwork you need. But basically, we have evidence against the countess. And I want you to tell the council that we need their support to clean up Donnerhurst after we're done, especially if we fail. As for you, well, you can just stay in Winterhaven. You can ask for a guy named Leroy Garvey. I know he's probably looking for a couple of runners. Yes. Tell him Donovan recommended you. Oh, yeah.

Josephine, if you still want to use your crossbow skills for the good fight, pretty sure there's a lady called Josephine who's looking for some more members in their band of mercenaries. Well, tell her Donovan recommended you to. Yeah. How about that? Yeah. Yeah, fine. What are you doing going back? Yeah, I assume after Donovan exchange. Yeah. Well, yeah. So you saw what you were there with what happened to Ubo and you remember Clifford? Yeah. Yeah, he just he didn't make it out of this last fight. And I mean, we found stuff that the tiefling one. It's not just stopping here.

She wants to keep expanding, I guess. And well, we got to try to stop it at least and sending word with you so that if we don't make it, then people that are hopefully stronger and smarter than us can take another crack at it. But yeah, that's yeah, I guess we're going to. Yeah. You're just going to go fight her? Yeah, her and the thing anyone else? I mean, probably hopefully we'll figure out some kind of plan. I mean, that's more of the like ampin kind of thing. Also, Trent, maybe you can help us with that. He's going to tense up again. Not like coming with us, but like, I mean, the sewer stuff, like that's how you got out.

Right. Did you get back in that way? Yeah, I just it wasn't easy, but yeah. You want to sneak in that way? Maybe. I mean, at this point, just any kind of information you have on the thing and the setup and I mean, we're kind of not working with a lot here, not going to lie. And so you can just tell us tomorrow if you want. Or now, like, it doesn't have to be right this moment. We're going to be here for at least another day. He's going to look down and like he's been like he stopped drinking. He's like three quarters through this and he's going to stop drinking.

I'm I'm real sorry about the kid that that that's not right. Yeah. Are you serious about fighting her? Yeah. Okay, look. I did. I don't recommend it, but. There was one time that she came out of the manor, castle thing, whatever. And it was right after the Fang started siding with her and they were turning people back and left and caging people. And she she told everyone to stand down and anybody who didn't agree with it that they could fight her. It was some. Elven thing. I don't know. There was a word or phrase or something, but she kept bandying it about and no one was allowed to interfere.

But none of the Fang. Aster would know what that is. Probably. Or, yeah. The only thing that sounds like the only thing that sounds familiar is is Quinn Fey. It's kind of this this this duel between two people who in elven culture have some sort of dispute that they can't settle with words. It's not usually to the death, but it's till there's a winner and no one's allowed to interfere in the process until, you know, there's a there's a definitive person who's who walks out and then can kind of claim victory. Yeah. But this is like a sick bastardized version of it, if this is true.

Yeah. Yeah. Astro will kind of squint a little bit. Quinn Fey? Is that the? Yeah, that sounds right. Yeah. Yeah. That's not really how that's I mean, no crazy vampire. Yeah, but tracks. OK. I I think it still stands like if you if you approach the place and just shout that. I don't think they're allowed to touch you because she is absolutely insane. She won't even let them in that house like she is. She will kill them. They're all terrified of her. Yeah, the problem is that's one on one combat, which I don't think it's going to go great. And he'll kind of squint.

It's like, no, no, no, no, no, no. She she took on seven or eight guys at once. Wait, she won on multiple? That huh? It was just anyone who doesn't agree with her. She she asked who who isn't willing to to go along and a bunch of guys stood up. She let him take in weapons. It only lasted 30 seconds. What did she do? He's going to look down like just. Look, I wouldn't fight her, but. I think that would work. That's yeah, but that might help a lot. I mean, if we did miraculously manage to somehow win, like would like after the fight, like if the thing was still around, would they?

I. What do you think they do? I don't know. I look I never quite fit in, but I. I think the only reason they're sticking with it is because they got a big gun. If you did kill her, why stick around? It's an empty city. Well, that's that's not good either. If we're trying to stop. The dangerous vampires from spreading around the mainland, if we cut the head of the boss and they just sneak around like rats and do what they want. What about Ripley? What's this thing? How can we get to him? How does he like? Yeah, you got that right, buddy. What does he like? What does he hate?

He's. I don't know much about him, to be honest. He's got a girlfriend or something that he always talks about, but that. I never met her, I don't think. Do you have a name? Titty, Tooty. Titty, Tooty. Titty, Tooty, I'll remember that. Oh, boy, that's that's going to come back. I love you, Jamie. Tati, Tati, I can work with that. So imaginary girlfriend. OK. I wish you guys all the luck. I do. I just. I can't go back in there. Oh, I don't want you anywhere near the place. I want to see you ever again. He smiles. I think I'm going to take you up on that offer and go to Winterhaven.

Yeah, it's a pretty big town, right? That's lots of people. Walls, walls. Yep. Well, guards, the whole shebang. You'll love it there. Donovan reaches for his bag that he left behind the table and he removed his tabard, like the Kirkland's tabard the other time. And so he starts folding it back neatly, like very carefully. And he like. Hands it to Trent. If you could stop by Aubrey on your way there and just drop this at the temple of the monitor, this belongs to a museum. It doesn't belong with me. I think they'll appreciate having it back. Yeah, yeah, I can do that, too.

It's on the way. Yeah, we need to get the whole group together and get Amven to give you the whatever stuff you're going to need to actually get to the important people. And I mean, Amven knows a way to make sure they know it's legit. Yeah, he'll take care of it. Oh, last thing, if you ever need if you're short on money for now, I don't have a lot of coin on me, but and he takes his share of the flowers. He'll keep one. Don't touch these ever. But Astor here tells me you can sell those for some good money. Maybe that's going to help you get a start. You deserve, Trent.

Thanks for your help. Astor will tell him what the flowers are and what they do so he knows. I have some pretty flowers. Yeah, that's probably best. Look, five gold, man, just five gold. I need to get down the road. Yeah, he would if you told it, it's like, are you sure? I might not need it after that, so I might not get to use it. Why don't you take it? We got some of our own. Don't worry, we kind of stumbled upon a jackpot. I never pay for my own tab anyway, so. Hey, that's. This is the nicest thing anyone's ever done for me. And I I've really appreciated. Thank you.

You're OK, Trent. You're OK. You're you're not a bad person. I always thought I was kind of piece of shit, but. Well, join the club sometimes. That's how it is, and sometimes you get the chance to not be a piece of shit and. Pay it forward when you get the chance. Yeah. Yeah, I'm you're not going to regret it. Seriously, thank you. Hey, one more thing, if you do decide to do this and I wouldn't please don't, but if you do. I, I, they're not going to follow you into the house. I don't think they will, but I don't know what's in that house. And everyone was really scared to go in, so.

I don't think it's just her in there, so. I think. I think if you can get to her, she'll fight you, but I. I don't I don't know if getting to her is going to be so easy. Yeah, if there's a way to get her out of the house. I don't think fighting a. Immortal magic user in a place they've had time to set things up for however many decades is a great idea. I wish I knew more about vampire stuff, because I mean, I know I didn't want to be one, but. She's not she's not like them. I. There she's on a whole different level, so I. Maybe some of the old legends are true.

I don't know. Just. Good luck, OK? Yeah, thanks. We're going to need it and good luck to you too as well. And if we don't make it out, at least there's someone that will remember us. He's going to furrow his brow a bit like, God, just don't go like have a good time. Like how about that? Like just like that type of thing, but like he's going to kind of wipe his mouth off and get up and. Kind of give you guys one last look and then head out the door. Hold on, Trent, hold on. He's going to look at Esther and Trent like. You sure you're just leaving now? He's going to be like, yeah, I want to get out of here.

All right. I just think you two should sleep together. Oh, wow. Um. He's like, OK, he'll raise both hands and go like, oh, I don't know. I. Look, I that's what the money's for. I know, like no offense, but not what I was not interested in. No, no, no, I appreciate it. I do. And I it's not that you're not attractive and that's it's nice, but I think there's kind of another girl that I was thinking about. If I ever see her again, maybe, you know. Yeah, not what I was going for at all, Donovan. Um, what? I guess I misread the whole situation. It's my bad. I feel bad about it.

We literally met him climbing out of the sewer. I don't know. I think he's cute. Then you sleep with him. No, I. Huh? Is that loud? Because it's like he's just there. Yeah. Yeah. Hey, um, you two, good luck. Thank you. And I'm just going to go ahead and find a wagon that's heading that way and hitch a ride. And no offense, you're both very attractive. You're both very pretty. And I think that that that that you're going to find somebody. Goodbye, Trent. Okay, bye. Asher just has their head in their hands. Like they're just like. So, Jason, yes. Is the timing makes sense for things that have been going on off camera for Skalnar to be able to walk in right at this moment?

Okay. No, it's not it's not like start another another thread for the scene. Skalnar enters the bar as Trent leaves and sits down at the bar right in front of the barkeep. Like kind of bashfully. And he like nods his head over at the window and he says, I'm here to close my tab. I we got to push things just a little bit farther because we're not even on the road yet. Yeah. And we got one more episode for the arc, so we might. That's my plan anyway. I don't know if that's going, but. Um, also like motion to am in the talk to Trent to get that paperwork sorted out.

And that doesn't need to happen on camera, but just making sure that that is canon. So, yeah, well, uh, still, I don't know. Staying out the window to see Trent and no book, everyone ready that. Perfect. Oh, boy, we need a funeral. Yeah. Well, how about we get to that? So the group's back together. And there's some unfortunate business that has to be taken care of. And I think I'll hand things over to Missoka and Maddie. I feel like they're running proceedings. All right, fine. Make our job more awkward. Well, thank you. Thanks, Jason. So just to set the scene, then just before dawn, probably at the cemetery.

Um, so they just lowered the body. Actually, it might be best for Missoka to start. Yeah. Okay. I guess everyone's here. Um. So. I don't want to make this about me, because this is obviously about Clifford. But just so everyone knows here, when I was a kid, I didn't have parents. I didn't have I didn't have anything really. Even the other kids that I grew up with in that orphanage, monitors, like they didn't like me very much. And I was always getting into trouble. And in any way, when I saw Clifford, I think I just saw a lot of me and I wanted to do whatever I could to help him.

Um, to get him out of there and to maybe show him a better life. But, uh, obviously, that's not going to happen now. I just want to say here in front of everybody that I think we're all going to do everything we can to make, uh, to make Clifford's life have a little bit more purpose. And, uh, and make right what happened last night. Um. He was only 12 years old. But, uh, you know, he showed us that, uh, yeah, he was pretty good at kicking ass out there. And I think, uh, I think we can show him how much we can kick ass on his behalf and do whatever we can to take out that countess.

I don't know. That's all that's on my mind right now. I don't know. I don't really know what else to say. I guess he'll just look at Maddie for, for something. It's, it's funny. I spent all of yesterday getting, looking for this and she'll pull the bow off of her back that she bought for Clifford. So he wouldn't have to be in the fray. I wasn't able to give it to him. Then she'll start looking around the group one by one. We have to remember who caused this. We tried to bring light into his life. The countess snuffed it out repeatedly. She took him from the world and turned him into a vampire.

We tried to give him the power to we tried to give him some hope, but she just takes and takes and takes. We will avenge you Clifford and she'll look down to the grave. And I know wherever you are, it's better than the life. This life that you had. I hope that we brought you some modicum of joy while you were here. And she'll lower the bow down into the grave. You will be missed, but you will be avenged. And then Maddie will stand up and go over to Missoka and hold his hand. Aster's gonna walk up and they're gonna take one of the flowers that they got and they're gonna put it on with him.

And I'm not good with words and stuff, but we'll carry you with us. And I don't know if we can do it, but we're gonna try. And that's what you always did. So yeah, gonna do it. And you were good kid. You were real good. Ambit's gonna look up and look around and this thing, just the countess of abpheric disease has taken more than one friend. Yet we didn't know Cliff before, we didn't see it happen, but technically, and also we'll look at Maddie and Missoka, it was gonna be another project of mine. Thought I had more time. Let's stop this from happening to anyone.

I guess Skalner will step up. Obviously, I just got here more or less. I did not really know the boy at all, but I have children of my own. I have three. And if somebody did to one of them what she did to him, I would not rest until she was destroyed. And I would make sure that she suffered in the process. So that much I will do for Clifford. And then he just steps back. Yeah, Donovan looks around at the group. He doesn't have much more to say, so he'll just come closer. And yeah, I'll just go back to him. Yeah, Cliff, everyone's pretty much said it. I'd pour one out for you, but you're underage, so I'll just save it for myself.

Listen, we'll get her. Just rest in peace in the bosom of the Earth. Kind of looks at Mattie, like not sure if that sounded religious enough. Mattie will shrug. Small shrug. And he'll just kind of like salute at Clifford and walk back. Hey, guys, I think that's a good time for us to stop for the night. Yeah, man, no more sad, please. No more sad. We still have to die. Yeah, I know. Maybe we can make it a dying party. They still have to die. We need to do some shopping, probably. Maybe we can do the shopping like a montage. Yeah, yeah. I'm feeling a montage. We need more stuff we've got to talk about as a group, too, because we haven't really.

Yep, I'm all for that. We all have two hours of leveling up next time, so we get a little. Yeah, that's true. We closed off what we could with the time we had. Yeah, yeah. It's 1 a.m. on the East Coast. I don't want to like kill anyone. Whatever. We can try to go for the 30 after instead of the hour. I get you. Starting time. It's almost 1 a.m. on the East Coast. We get you. Well, oh, boy, it's almost that time, guys. This is going to be fun. It's going to be a chunky one. Yeah. Yeah, next episode is going to be probably long.
