Hope you enjoy the show. Let's do that thing. We'll be going around the table to introduce ourselves. I'm Jason. I'm the Dungeon Master. Going around the table, starting with James. Hi, I'm James.
I assume we're introducing our characters right off the bat. Or are we going to wait? No, just you. Yeah. Just you. OK. No. Then I'm James. I'm in this group with these lovely people, and I'm happy to be here. So what I'm going to do to get a chance to know you guys a little better, because I'm just getting to know you, really. It's been-- it's really a short time. I'm just going to ask you a random question. So let's say this is someone's first show. Stanley always had an expression that's like, every comic is someone's first comic book. So we want them to get to know you.
So OK, who do you think it's OK to steal from? You, James, like the person. Like, in general, people? Who is it OK to steal from? Yeah, just like-- just like, do you think it's OK to steal from anyone? Let's put it that way. Let's do that first. I'm a pretty big rules guy, so-- Eat the rich, James. I'd say I've never stolen. [LAUGHTER] The government? They steal from us. Which government? Canadian government? It's just them? All governments, I'm pretty sure. All government, OK. All right. OK. A pretty big rules guy, but also an anarcho-sogamist. [LAUGHTER] I may or may not be making plans.
Kelsey, why are white people terrible? I'm joking. That's not your question. [LAUGHTER] If you want-- [INTERPOSING VOICES] --like a whole world. We could go into that, but I thought we were going to play a game chat. No, no, no, no. We don't have time. [INTERPOSING VOICES] Which genocide do you want me to cover? Because there are a few we could choose from. Look, we already lost middle America. I'm just trying to-- like, it was a joke. Let's move on. Let's say you were running for public office. Why should someone vote for you? What's your platform? [LAUGHTER] Well, this is why I don't want to run for public office.
Also, hi, I'm Kelsey. I use they/them pronouns. This is the first time on the show, so I should introduce myself. But yeah, why should someone vote for me? I don't know, because-- see, this is-- I want to have a fancy graphic or something visual, but instead, I just have to say things. And just vote for me, because-- eat the rich, as I said earlier. [LAUGHTER] Do you want to speak in infographics? Yeah, OK. Yeah, we can get a budget together for that. Yeah, let's-- OK. That was not the best bit. I'm going to be honest with you. Like, I don't believe you really want to eat the rich.
It's almost like you asked me the worst question. That's the point. James got luke-baled, I'm just saying. [LAUGHTER] Hold on. I-- [LAUGHTER] Michael, horses, yay or nay? I hate it. I hate it. Get out of here. Are you, like, on an icebreaker's web show? Why would you ask me the worst question? We talked about horses earlier. We know Kelsey has strong negative feelings on horses. No, I think horses are cool. They're just awesome, very weird animals. [LAUGHTER] So weird. Yay or nay? Come on. Yeah, I know. I know. I know what I did. You're not supposed to do that. I'm not supposed to-- look, that is my curse.
I hate them, but I'm really good at them. [LAUGHTER] I'm a dad joke machine with no children. And it's just-- I don't want them. Kids love those jokes. I know. Until about eight or nine. I'm getting grief now, but-- And that's when we kill them all. [LAUGHTER] Hey, Michael. Yeah, horses are cool. Don't have any strong feelings either way. I don't want one for myself, but they're cool. Eat the horses. [LAUGHTER] Eat the horses, everyone. Yeah, as Kelsey said, eat the horses. Now I picture a horse with a top hat and a stogie, like just burning $100 bills. [LAUGHTER] You can assume inflation.
Uh, Ian? Hi, I'm Ian. I use he/him pronouns. Hello. Ian, if you were a car, who would you run over first? Elon Musk. Yeah. Oh, good answer. Good answer. [LAUGHTER] Good answer. Oh. It's good because it's ironic as well. Like, oh, man, it's beautiful. I like it. There you go. There you go. Did you hit him with his own ugly truck? Or was it like-- Oh, absolutely, I do. Oh, good stuff. We run over and then back up and run over again, just to make sure we got it. And then the windshields break because they wouldn't. What's wrong with Elon? I think he's a douche nozzle. And I-- He's-- OK. [LAUGHTER] Just look, again, we've already lost middle America.
I don't like-- [INTERPOSING VOICES] I don't like the myth of the self-made man and people touting him as like, oh, man, he did it all himself. It's like, one, his dad owned an emerald mind and profited off of apartheid. Let's chill the fuck out. Yeah. But just saying. Just saying. Anyway, bye, Elon. Valerie, apartheid, good or bad? [LAUGHTER] Shh. I thought we would have people like-- You were thinking about it way too long. [LAUGHTER] No, no, no, no. Listen. [SCREAMING] Listen, Jana, Firebird struggled so much. There was a good two seconds there. I know. You are saying it's up to fail already.
We haven't even started playing. No, no, no. I wanted to break the ice here to get Valerie to answer the fucking question. I wanted to set things up here to kind of-- Is this relevant to our story? It is not. Not in any way. No, no, no. That's what you said last time. [LAUGHTER] Let's-- sorry. Anyway, I'm Valerie. I use she/her pronouns. Welcome. [LAUGHTER] I didn't hear an answer to that question. Yeah, we're still hanging. We're still hanging. [LAUGHTER] OK, I'm pretty sure-- I'm pretty sure the answer is that it's bad. We're pretty sure. [LAUGHTER] Listen, I always get confused about exactly what the definition of apartheid is.
I mean, it just doesn't stick in my brain. I'm pretty sure it's bad. [LAUGHTER] Moving on. That's your homework for tonight. You go home, and you fucking-- [LAUGHTER] I want a paper on my desk. You know what? Can we get a bullet? That might be the straw. Maybe we-- [LAUGHTER] This is when we AD our Valerie, and then we just-- it's like, where's Mr. Black? So let's actually play a game here. After everyone's already stopped listening. [LAUGHTER] Yeah, no, we lost everybody, but that's OK. [CLICK] It can only go up from here. We're kicking off in the turmoil-ridden city of Brightport.
Brightport is this massive city on the west coast-- the east coast, sorry. I was opening my recording software, and it said west, and I'm that influenceable. [LAUGHTER] The east coast. [LAUGHTER] The east coast. And recently, there has been some problems. And let's do this chronologically. There's been a huge crime epidemic in Brightport now for many years. That's long documented. We've done multiple arcs, and it's not great. There was an effort recently to clean up the streets. A almost-- like a daredevil hitting the streets, let's stop some crime type of thing.
That didn't last long or go well. As a matter of fact, if you listen to ARC4, not a single event that Firebrand set out to do went well. Like, not-- I don't think a roll went well. I don't think-- you know, like, they attempted a drug bust. A lot of people got stabbed, but it was on their team. A lot of stuff. So the mayor died, who was a big proponent of cleaning stuff up, which kind of sent a message to everybody that, don't try to clean up Brightport, you know? You'll just-- you'll end up trampled to death. I didn't even cover the huge fire and riots that were started.
And to top it all off, there are now robots, full-fledged robots, Warforged, with no soul, run by one person on the rooftops, looking down at humanity. Like, sentry bots. We got sentry droids. It is a tense time on the streets of Brightport. Now, it's been many weeks since that started. People are trying to go about their regular, everyday lives. But it's tough, man, because... some crime is being stopped, but only the stuff obvious enough that it's out on street corners or something like that. Robots swoop in, they take you off to jail, and for the most part, there's no trial.
They just take you away. And that is... calls for concern for a lot of citizens. Now, what I want to do is I want to open on... someone we're carrying over from Lastark. Someone who knows all too well that... what happened to Firebrand was unfortunate. And Kel... let's... Typical day. It's noon. City of Brightport. What are you doing? Set a scene here. Let's see if it's noon. Ellipsa's probably still back in their apartment, I think, inside the non-state. And they're still sort of... not waking up. They've been awake, but they haven't gone out yet, I don't think.
They kind of... their job and everything sort of tends to be more towards later nights. So they probably are a little bit later to rise, unless they have something specific planned. So they're probably just sort of getting ready for the day, so to speak. So me. It's like, oh, noon. That would be my perfect day. Oh my God. Day off. It's like, all right, it's noon. Time to start getting ready for the day. Yeah. I mean, they're not waking up. They've been awake, but sort of like... getting to the point where they're actually getting ready to be a person. You know, that's sort of...
So paint a picture of the apartment. Like, what are they doing? Like, so, okay, they roll out of bed. They're getting dressed. They're like, what's on the docket? Yeah. So I mean, their apartment's probably like... really like sort of on more like the small, cozy side that is pretty nicely furnished. Like more towards like quality over quantity, I think, is probably more lines what they're carrying. And as far as like clothing goes, they're not... It's still too early in the day to be putting on like any sort of like performance outfits or anything. So probably more of just general going out kind of year.
Probably like coat, boots, something that looks pretty nice, but not like as flashy as what they'd wear. When it's time for the stage, then they're probably like not taking their violin with them to go out right now. But still like making sure it's still in like good shape and like doing general instruments, maintenance. Like taking care of like the strings and everything and all that stuff that I don't know the exact terms for. But that you do. I was about to say, do you know anything about it? I know a little bit. You got a cock-it, I think. Like I don't know how violent.
Yeah, just like I think you like wax or oil like the strings and also like replace any that are like not in good shape because they do break over time. And also like the bow itself like that needs to be worked on and thing. It's especially, yeah. Can you feel that right now? In the future, there's a chat live. And some violin expert is either going, yeah, that's pretty much correct or what a fucking idiot. Here we go. I've done that so many times. I play drums. I use sticks to hit things to make music. I always wanted to learn how to play guitar. You can rosin up your bow.
So that's a thing. Did you just look that up? No, I know that. But you don't know what parts I'd. I own a violin. Well, speak of the fair. I don't own an apartheid. Okay. Oh man, do we start over? No. Okay. We're just going to plow through. Here we go. So I'm with Val on this, by the way. Really? Sure. How often do you use the word apartheid? Well, okay. It's like Holocaust. I mean, you don't use it often, but like it's. I would ask, I would say more about what I think it is, but I don't want to be wrong. That's that's fair. You know what? That is that's totally fair.
Like legit. So I don't want to describe what I think it is because right. Like I have an idea of what it is. I think whisper to my ear, but I don't want to sit. Well, it's apartheid is the one where the the not that the military takes over, but that like there's like militias and they overthrew the government, but it's like supposed to like make the world a better place. I'll tell you what, give me a continent. What continent did it affect? Africa. Okay, good. Okay. 10 points to Gryffindor. All right. So that's, that's what I was looking for. It's like, give me at least do that.
Wasn't it like specifically South Africa that had an apartment? I think other countries did. Yeah. Just see, okay, you're digging out of that hole already. All right now, stop talking. Those chat forums in the future are going crazy right now. Sorry, I'm sorry. I know about chemistry. That's that's good. So James. Noon, Brightport, you're out and about. Paint me a picture. I have a question first. Okay. About Gates and how, what was the closest gate to Brightport? So everyone out there, we're not talking about the, the like the gate with the road leading into Brightport.
You're talking about the portals, basically. Yes, I am. Sorry. Now there are seven of these out in the wild. There is one on the East coast, but it's all the way South. It's in a city called Onakol. And there's one on the West coast, which is smack dab in the middle of the evergreen dense forest in a cave. So you're not really near one of those. It would be hundreds of miles away. I'm, I'm, well, I'm just trying to, you know, how my character got to Brightport, he probably did not walk the whole way. Oh yeah, no, I mean, here's the thing. They have ships leaving from Onakol sailing up to Brightport.
Okay. Well, let's, let's just say that he is looking clean because he wouldn't be out there, you know, fending for himself in the wilderness. But he's probably just recently arrived to Brightport. So I would picture him in like some nice posh, clean leather armor just in case. And probably wandering the streets, really just taking it all in because he's never been there before. So you're a high elf and a Ladron. This, so this screams new guy. One, you're young, you're a younger, you're a younger person. That's right. And new leather armor has a very distinct sound.
It's very, it's very like, yeah. It's like, it's, it's, it's like, okay, you're Catwoman walking around. Like, like, like you can tell, like this was brand new made for the occasion. Exactly. Yes. It's like a new baseball glove. Like it's a, you've never been in, you've never been stabbed. You'd never, like, you look at someone who's from like house Silverclaw or like a rogue or like most of the people who work on the docks, like they probably have like patchwork leather armor. It's, it's worn down to the point where it's almost cloth, right? It just, it's your stuff.
It's like, like you almost have a, like a, like a, it's like, they don't know if that's your posture or the armor doing that to you. It's almost a corset. Like it's, it's really the cleave. Amazing on day. And, and if it is uncomfortable, you would never let it be known. Good. Very British. I like it. Michael, you're going to see this very posh young. I'm okay. Hold on. That sounded like I was, I was getting you to hit on him. That's not, it's like this sultry. No. So you're going to see, you're going to see this guy, like real pigeon, honestly, like he's showing up to the New York of Theria fresh off the boat as it were.
Paint me a picture. I said, I'm leaning against a, one of the walls. Are you, I don't know if we're like in middle city or see him walking by, maybe he's looking around for something, maybe a place to buy things. So at least that's my hope. And then I'm wearing a, it's like a three piece suit, but not like the blazer, but it's like the vest. Ben, but like underneath bottom, but if you look far away, it looks really nice and looks like really fancy. But if you get closer and closer, you take it in, you realize it's really worn and weathered and like it's better on the block.
And then just seeing this guy come and, you know, I, I grin and kind of like look around and put my game face on as it were and put some cards in my pocket and walk up to this young gentleman and showing it and trying to appear all authoritative and knowing. Here's, okay, here's what I want you to do. James, as Dagon, I need you to give me a dice roll. Like on a scale of one to 10, how distinguished does the city come off so far? Like you're off the boat, you're wandering around. So imagine to keep up with the New York analogy, right? Is this the Times Square?
Oh, look, it's, it's wonderful experience. Did they take you to Brooklyn first? Or is this like a Staten Island back alley Manhattan tour where you're like, oh, look, that rat's doing heroin. Like, is it like, is it on a scale of one to 10, 10 being very distinguished? Nice. So far one being Pizza Rat. I mean, there's layers in Brightport and, and coming from Odysseia, he's probably walking around with his nose in the air because he's come in right from, from, from the gates. And he's probably already gone through a couple of different areas. Maybe he's in the nicer part now, but it's still, it probably smells.
It's, it's, I mean, it's definitely got its highlights for sure, but it's probably not the cleanest either. Am I on the mark there? You definitely, yeah. You're going to have some preconceived notions anyway. You're going to kind of go into the city. It's like, well, it's not, you know, it's, it's not an Aladrin city. It's it's, it's going to be a little behind the times. Probably very low tech. Some, some low moral fiber individuals, but I want to know how hard this backs up your preconceived prejudices. He's, he's, you can tell looking at him that he's kind of disgusted to be there.
And you might question why someone who looks like him and looks the way his face looks or the expression would want to even, you know, wondering why they're even walking around the streets by themselves in Brightport. He's not having a great time because he's there. He's there out of necessity. Give me that d10 roll. I need to know something for, for, for Jason, for me. Five. Okay. But you're right. It's, it's, it's got layers like an ogre. It's there's been some nice stuff. There's been some pizza rats. There's just, it's just, it's all over the map, right?
Depending on where you go, like, obviously you have to go through the docks because you're getting off ships. You're going to get some stairs, you know, fancy young kid in his, his Michelle Pfeiffer Catwoman leather. And like, you know, I, please tell me you have a whip. Do you have a whip? No. Okay, damn. Well, we got to get you a whip while we're in the city, but that's later. This is his fancy sword. Oh, okay. So, and he's by himself. Yeah, no, everything about you screams open and vulnerable. Take me to an alley, murder me and steal my things. Exactly. Like just, just the armor on your back is worth enough money for someone to hurt you and take it.
Like your, your boots are nice. I imagine you're the type of person who doesn't like a scuffed boot, like that type of thing. So Michael, you're coming in. You see this, you, you, you, you see this guy. Yo. You want me to? Please. Yeah. How do you approach? All right. So seeing his, his walk and is, is they got walking like confidently or is he looking unsure of himself? I would say he has an air of confidence, just unsure of, you know, why he's going through this even. But you definitely would look like he's there with purpose. Okay. Looking for something is the appearance though.
Yeah. Okay. So I'm going to stride up, but I'm actually going to intentionally be visible. So you see me coming, coming in front and I know how to say it. Good Lord. Any, anything I can help you find, locate, resolve? I'm sorry. Did I give the impression that I wanted to speak to somebody? No, but you gave the intention that you needed somewhere to be and maybe not fast enough. And I could maybe lead you to that location and be away from said place and said foul people and new, new people without an entourage can quickly become put at a disadvantage. And I wanted to give you an advantage.
This is a trying city. Hmm. Well, you're certainly right about the foulness, but I'm sure I can handle myself. Well, well, good Lord, I'm here if you need anything. And I do think I could potentially find opportunities, a place to sleep. I think you just came off the boat, I believe from that direction. Anyway, I could be wrong. Your manor house could be nearby, sir, but perhaps I could help. You kind of like, sort of give this look like he's kind of giving up on his own stubbornness. Look, maybe you can help me. I'm looking for a house, a particular house.
I believe it is called house Dragon keep. Do you think maybe you could just tell me where it is? Ah, but to tell you in this city alone would not be advantageous to your health. Here, I would make me the happiest person in the world if I were just to guide you to this, to the house dragon keep and show you around and keep you away from some of those others who may take advantage of the situation. 30% of this reminds me of Atlanta. Like if this is Atlanta, this is what this is. Everyone wants to be your guide to somewhere. Look, I know I can, I know I can buy information.
I have money. Do you want money? Just just tell me why are you so insistent to take me there? How loudly does Dagon say that? Oh, I'm sure anybody around him would have heard that. Good to know. I look around and look at the eye and other those eyeing. And then I, I kind of like look at their look at their eyes and some recognize me and others don't because I'm not that well known. And then look, we get many people coming in here. I just want to make sure that one of them doesn't have a foul end. And maybe, maybe I want a few coin in the end. What's so wrong with that?
But let's, let's see what opportunities show up for you that may paying for my opportunities for myself in the future, just by giving a little bit of goodness to others. All right. Look, I'll allow you to take me, but don't think that I'm not capable of doing this myself. I will humor you this once. Oh, good Lord. Don't don't even, I know you can well handle yourself. All right. Look at that blade. I'm only here to see what amazing things could happen. And maybe, like you said, have some going, but mostly I want to see where your story begins and I will start walking away as if it would be going to where the directions and see if he will follow or if he stays.
Two quick questions. One, does it look like your sword has ever even, have you ever even practiced with it? Or is it so, okay. But this is probably a brand new sword. Okay. You probably got a super fancy one. Just, you know, of course, he's going to come to a new city and show himself off. Dagon would come to a new city and not buy a new sword. I know. What am I, poor? I'm going to show up and know the call sword. That's not the new summer fashions. Yeah. Last season. On that comment I had last about, of course you can have. One more question. How old is Dagon?
He's 16. Fantastic. Okay, good. Yes. So keep that mental image, everyone of like that, that stubborn. That's like, oh, of course I can do this myself. Just man. Okay, the city's going to eat you alive. Let's let's okay. Does Dagon follow? Yes. I'm trying to figure out how. I'm guessing he has like a, some sort of, I don't want to say backpack, but like a, what's a fancier backpack. I don't know. I'm a JanSport man myself. I don't know. What's a fancy backpack. Any over the shoulder bag. Like a duffel, like maybe a messenger bag type of thing. Like you embroidered duffel.
Oh man. So in there, he's going to have like, you know, some really nice clothes. Maybe some of his gold, you know, but he's probably at least old enough to like not put it all in one place anyway. You know, whatever he's going to take it off and he's going to hand it to this guy. You carry this. It would be my honor. Good Lord. And I take the bag. Name? I'm Fenris, good Lord. Dagon. Dagon Arkanscape. Aladdin of Odysseus. Oh, that is quite a distance you've traveled. Nice to meet you. So this is interesting. Do me a favor, Michael. I need to know what you might know about Odysseus as a whole.
Because I imagine part of your profession, let's call it, is kind of knowing your mark, right? So let's see. Let's see what knowledge you might have. Oh, this will be our first role in Cortex for you guys. Like I've done this before, obviously we've all done this before, but you know, yeah. I feel like is your character more bookleted or street smart? I think I know the answer to this, but street smart. Okay, so give me basically we're doing a good old fashioned lore skill check here. So this one sadly is going to be intellect. Give me intellect, lore, and then your class.
Six, eight. Okay. And I'm going to say that this is right down the middle. This is a difficulty of eight. So, oh, Jesus, 15 to get everything out of this. Okay. Oh, that's not great. So there's a one in there. We got to throw that die away. It's just eight. Yeah. So I think what you would know, what Fenris would know is up until fairly recently, Odysseus was demolished. It hadn't been inhabited in a hundred years. And then some funky weird magic stuff is going on. And now we have two sets of Elatrin for some reason. And some of them are fake and some of them are real.
And it's all just like, whatever. I imagine if someone did try to tell you about this eventually, it's like, sounds like not my problem. And you just kind of like, let it go. Okay. Sounds like more people like potentially they can mark on. That's all. Exactly. You're a terrible person. You're welcome. Let's jump across town again. So, Val, noon, noon in Brightport. Paint me a picture. What are you doing? What's happening? So I think Matilda would be working in the library. It's around noon. So she's probably on her lunch break, but she prefers to just eat in the back where she can keep doing research and looking things up while she eats.
So she's just vibing. She's at work. So at a certain point, sadly, one, this isn't a tremendous library. It's not huge. Fancy book learning is not a prime skill in Brightport. So not a lot of government money is being given to the library, not like in real life. Eventually, someone is going to come in and you hear the little bell go off in the front and it's like, okay, damn it. You're probably used to this. It's not completely uncommon that someone comes in around lunch. So any interruption is probably a little annoying. It sounds like it's like, ah, damn, I was in the middle of something, but you're always in the middle of something.
Yeah. Kels. Yep. Libraries. Yay or nay. Like me or clip. So yes, as a concept, are you pro library? Yeah. Okay. No, I just. Why? What did I see? I don't know. Yeah, fuck those libraries. I just wanted to see if you were still paying attention. That's all I just like every hot take. I don't like knowledge. But you're walking into this library. What are you after here? What's the, what brought you to the library today? So it was probably going to look into history of bright for it. Like, they are specifically trying to find more information on the manner that they have inherited and have yet to really visit and investigate because they know there are some the few odd rumors and stuff going around there.
So if you're trying to find out more before they actually go in person. So. You fire brand the small police force. Basically, you were a part of is no more, at least not in any recognizable way. So you're, you're, you're separated from that and just trying to find more out about the city. Obviously, you're, you're, you're, you're dearly beloved uncle passed away. You didn't even know that you had and left you just a whole bunch of stuff in, in the Hills, far above bright port. There's a, there's a manor house. There's, there's all kinds of stuff. And you just been given pinned down here.
Haven't had a chance to take a look. So you are, you're looking into that and Val, I imagine Matilda is at least kind of like, it's like, who's that? Like kind of like peeking out. Yeah. Cause you know, it being bright port, there's probably not too many people that come into the library. So it's always kind of interesting to see who shows up and like what they're looking for. And Matilda likes to help people like go through all of the books and scrolls and help them find what they're looking for. So she would definitely like pop her out out and see who it is that's coming in.
And I would imagine there's a lot of books that are, you know, public knowledge and stuff. The more the more rare or valuable books are probably kept behind, probably behind lock and key. Let's be honest. I myself live in Sacramento, the arcade area. And I have been told by many, many a clerk that this is a high theft neighborhood. So anything of any value is really kept behind glass. So take it away Kels. Yeah. So Calypso will see Matilda. Does Matilda like approach them or does she just? If when they when they come in the door, Matilda will probably like put down her lunch and start walking to the front of the library.
Yeah. Yeah. So let's say this is someone who works here and knows their way around. It's probably better to ask for help and maybe get something more out of it. But they'll just nice pleasant smile on their face kind of. Yeah. Like first the front desk or equivalent of that. And just yes. Hello. Are you a librarian here? Hi. Yes, I am. Is there anything specific that I can help you look for? Yes, exactly. That would be a great deal of help. I'm looking into local history, specifically around the outskirts of the city and architecture and the... Jason, what was the name of the place?
The manor? Oh, officially, this is known as the Abernathy Manor. Yes. Specifically, I'm looking into the Abernathy Manor. If you've heard of that. Have I heard of it? Would I have heard of it? You faded out there one second. Sorry. Um, have I heard of the Abernathy Manor? Let's see. Give me a lore check. Two lore checks in a row? Check. Okay, so that's class and lore, I would assume. And what's the other thing? Oh, intellect? Yes. Yeah, I got it. Perfect. Okay, here we go. So one, this is a pretty simple check. I'm just gonna throw a couple of D6s at this one and eight.
So I'm gonna say you definitely, you know a ton about this manor. Ah, yes, of course. Okay. Uh, Matilda will say, oh, yeah, I think I have read about that before. They keep all of the like old building plans and blueprints and stuff back here as well, just because there's not a ton of books. So this works sort of as a storage place for all of those things, too. And I think I've seen some stuff about it. I can go in the back and pull some stuff out if you'd like. Oh, yes, that would be so helpful. Thank you. By the way, my name is Calypso. It's a pleasure to meet you.
Nice to meet you, too. I am Matilda and she's gonna go to the back and start pulling out some scrolls. Yeah. So this is crazy fortuitous. You probably expect to go there and it's like, oh, yeah, it's mentioned in a couple of books. You could crazy. It's like, oh, we have sort through the microfiche. I don't know. It's probably mentioned in a whatever, but this is like, no, no, no. We got building plans and stuff. We probably this is awesome. Like, that's fantastic. I want to cut away. Ian, you're probably the most complicated of the characters we're going to introduce today.
I need you to paint me a picture. It's noon. It's bright port. Nice sunny day. And people have been eyeballing you since you got off the boat. Now, maybe not in the same way they would eyeball a young 16 year old boy in fresh armor, but definitely more warily eyeballing you. Paint me a picture. Gotcha. Gotcha. Yeah. Well, I think this Thetan has been in bright port for a little bit of time, but I think people are still looking at him like you just got off the boat for sure, because Thetans are tall, sort of like lean basketball player builds. He's got spikes coming out of everywhere on his shoulders and scapula and on his head, arms and legs.
No mouth. There's like a big bone plate that's over his mouth and sort of like external bones that are poking out around his chest and like a really nasty looking slit up his abdomen. That is exposed. And I think in as it's noon, he probably hasn't eaten since like yesterday, maybe even before that. And there's not a lot of people that are looking to give charity to someone who doesn't seem to have any knowledge of the city or anything like that. So I think he's probably looking for something to eat. He's got a big spear with an obsidian point, so he might be like at the docks or something, just like trying to spear a fish in the dirty water or something, or even maybe even like scooping into the water with his big arm, like his long arm, just like trying to catch something to eat.
Oh, God, that's so sad. That is so dirty, like dirty. Oh, man. So the city is not a great place to scavenge for like fresh food, like living food. Like again, rats, maybe. Yeah, yeah, that could be it. Yeah. Do me a favor. Okay. I'm going to give you two choices because you're in a city and this is a little weird. You can try to go hunting or you can do like an animal handling check to see if you can like lure something to you like you're the Pied Piper of vermin. Um, I think I think he would be very bad at getting things to like come to him. So I will go with hunting.
We'll go with some version of hunting. Okay. Uh, Jesus, God. So, okay, this is more like a savvy thing. So give me savvy class. And I think, okay, so right now, give me give me a track. Let me let me see if you can like, okay, I really want to paint a gross picture, but let's see what you get first. Gotcha. Savvy classes is a D8, right? Yes, it is. Okay. I think. Okay, one. So that's not great. We've got a four and a five. It's going to be nine. Okay, so let's let's he might not be eating today. And we'll see. Let's see what we got here. The difficulty would be like a seven.
Okay, so you're going to find stuff, but in Cortex, obviously you don't have an effect die now. So it's a D4. So it's the lowest. It's a success, but just barely. So you're going to be, um, this is, this is high noon. And that does a couple of things. There's lots of overpasses and bridges. And the, the, the city's very vertical in that it's over the century just kind of been built on top of itself, very New York, and that they've run out of room. Let's just go up, you know? So noon is one of your best chances to get light in dark alleys and try to see where you're see what you're doing.
So you're going to be scavenging around. And there is there's a restaurant that kind of like a, like a food stall. And what it does is it throws out, like a day old, like garbage. And this stuff is somehow less edible than a rat, but rats love it. So you're going to scoop up a plump one, just one rat. Uno rat. You got it. And just as like you, you grab this up and it's, it's doing the little like, ah, like it's, it's not happy about this, right? Um, you're going to see this very, at the end of the alley walking by, you're going to see this very prim, proper boy in like gaudy regalia, like high noon.
It is like the sun is going to catch the scabbard of his sword. It's like, oof, like, they didn't don't have eyelids. So like, it's yeah, right. They're beady little, like they're beady little eyes. It's just like, oh, okay. Um, and then next to next to the boy is someone who it looks like maybe a squire or like a lackey of some sort holding his belongings, walking side by side. And it's very curious because this is probably, you probably see fellow travelers. You probably came in with some, but they don't look like this. They, he looks almost as out of place in the city as you do.
By the way, the whole time, like the little rat is like trying to get out. It's little beady's. Yeah. Yeah. I've never held a rat. They're so cool. But like rats have a very distinctive tail. It's very like thick and it almost feels scaly and like it's, it's like, it kind of is, it kind of feels like that. It's yeah. It doesn't feel like you think it would. And this one's got huge balls too. Just like big balls on it. Yeah. Fun thing about rats is they're always peeing. You can actually trace a male rat because there's a trail of urine behind it. I've lived in bad neighborhoods.
So, um, black lights are lots of fun guys. Get in there, mix it up. Experience life. Get to know your neighborhood. I haven't been living. Oh man. You gotta, you gotta get in there, James. You gotta mix it up. Um, this, yeah, it's, I think it's so interesting because he's probably seen quite a few things since he's been in the city, but yeah, not, there's not been a lot of like that kind of person or whatever that kind of person is. Shiny people. Shiny people, but if there's one thing that he learned and learned real fast is like shiny people, uh, spend a lot of money and they throw a lot of stuff out.
So it's quite possible that if he follows this person, they might throw some, they might have a meal. They might get a snack or something and toss it away. And that trashes his gain. So I think he's gonna like go out to the alley and just like still holding this rat, just like poke his head out, see what he can see. I want you to know the great restraint that I'm showing right now by not making the 15 political jokes that I had ready to go in the chamber. But we had the opening that we had today and we've reached our quota. So I'm sorry. Um, I whisper him to me later.
Whisper him to me later. Oh, absolutely. I'll send him like hot texts in the middle of the night. Get him my DMs. Okay, CC me on those. I'm going to do, I'm going to do a little something. I'm going to roll. I'm going to roll a D10 here because I want to see on a scale of one to 10. How much attention has Dagon attracted? How many people are actually following him now? Everyone pops out from alleyways. Three. So not no attention, but like, let's say maybe here's the thing. It's, it's, it's, Fenris is probably leading him down alleyways that are like, look, I'm not looking for competition.
Let's take the ways that, you know, like let's take the well lit streets. We're not walking down crime alley tonight. Let's just, you know, um, but. There's, there are two people who don't look like they're with Dagon. They don't look like they're with the rich guy. Cause it's the clearly well off guy. And then like someone in a suit, maybe not as nice, but like they're, they're dressing up. And then two guys in like dirty, uh, like dirty leather armor. Um, you kind of surly looking dock worker guys. Um, so like they don't, they don't look like they're with him and they're following it a distance that says we're not with you, but we are following you that type of thing.
Got it. Got it. Um, well, I throw my rat in a little bag and, uh, I try and, uh, I try and be as inconspicuous as possible, which is pretty hard. I love that you're a forward thinker and you're not putting all your eggs in one basket. You're like, look, this rich guy thing might not pan out. At least I got rat for later. I got rat for later. Why waste good food? Yeah. So I, okay. Did you put the rat in your, your pack, like with your belongings? Oh, it's probably got like a little, uh, like a little burlap pouch or something. That's like for immediate things like a, like a, like, uh, that's what it is.
That's what it is. It's a rat bag or else you are going to get pee and poop all over your stuff. And that's what I was going to say. It's like, it's like, how, how, how much do you smell like rat urine? Like how, like I need to like on a scale of one to 10, paint a picture, give us a smell. Like, should we do a die roll for that? Should we do a filthy? It doesn't have to be rat pee, but like on top of stinky, he's pretty stinky. Let me paint a picture. Cause like. Every homeless person has to have their first day of homelessness. Right. You're not, you don't, I mean, like you, you could conceivably blend in, in a tavern or like, you know, Oh, I'm going to wash dishes or something like that.
But if you've been on the streets now for like weeks, let's say it's going to be a little tougher to like, you know, so yeah. On a scale of one to 10, give me a D 10. 10 being the most filthy and one being the least filthy. I got it. Oh, I love rolling them down the street like this. It's so much fun. Five right in the middle there. There's grocer in the city. Just tipping over, just tipping over. That's not a very high bar in brightport. It's really not. Like, I think it's one of those things where to a lot of people in the city, you probably, you probably look like you smell, you know what I mean?
It's like, yeah, that guy looks like he would smell like that's yeah, sure. And then every once in a while his bag squeaked at me. It was fucking weird. Definitely the thing they're focused on, not the whole like no mouth. Can I give you another fun rat fact? Yes, please. Rats, rats are tunnelers. So this better be like a chain mail bag. They can burrow through a human. Did you know that? Yeah, they have very strong teeth and they're very smart too. It's really crazy. Like it's like, I don't know why I know that, but that took up a portion of my brain that math should have been taking up.
So we have calculators for that. That's true. Yeah, whatever. I think that that thought, I don't think he has like a bag that's better than like cloth that he just found and like bunched up. So it's like, I better find this meal quick or rat is going to get out and then I will have nothing. Got it. Okay. So, so we got a rat countdown. We're gonna, we're gonna put that to the side. Put it up, put it up here, wherever. In the stream. Like it's like, so back to the, to the library to paint a picture though. We've got, we've got Dagon and Fenris walking down the street, then two guys walking behind them and then lanky basketball monster walking right behind those two.
So it gets, it gets more shifty as time goes on. Love it. I love it. Uh, let's get back to that library though. So so. You have access to a whole bunch of information about this, about this mansion. This, this manner. And this thing is huge. And it's interesting. You're going to see that there are three distinct plans. One was the original, which was, you know, your standard. It's like, oh, there's that. And then it looks like there were two additional. Two additional renovations done. There was one done about 30 years ago that it was mostly, it's like, oh, we're going to knock down this wall and make this bigger.
And there's a, there's like a little music hall in this place. Like there's like, there's an entire room for performances. Like it's weird. Like some people in the modern would have like a little movie theater room. This person had like a stage and like 30 or 40 people could fit in this, but like, it's weird. Like it's kind of weird. And then the third set of plans have been heavily redacted. Interesting. Like with markers? Like imagine like, okay, we have things like Presta Digitation, right? So these are blueprints that aren't like, it's not like military redacted where someone's going in there with like, you know, black, but like portions of this have clearly been erased.
Like they're missing. Like, yeah, bits conjoining different parts of the castle. Like they're gone. Like they're just missing. Interesting. So when that third one comes out and we see that clip, so kind of pause and then look at Matilda, like, is this normal for blueprints? Well, so Matilda's eyes are gonna like light up. And she's gonna look at Calypso. Do you say no, they don't usually look like this. Jason, is there like other stuff like in like history books about the mansion or like not just building plans? There's the original construction. Yes. Kind of this was one of the first people to kind of make their fortune off of spice trade, fabrics, things like that in Brightport, like one of the first.
But instead of staying in the game and kind of rolling over their wealth into the next generation and having a manor house there, like in town, like some of the very rich do in the city. They just bailed. It's like, this is not my passion anymore. Music is my passion. And they just left, like kind of made a show of it. Like it was very strange. Like it's almost like a lot of people just assumed. It's like, oh yeah, you went cuckoo bananas. Because like, why wouldn't you just want to keep making money? Why would I be one? Awesome. What are you doing art for you, lame-o?
Like, so a lot of people kind of labeled him as like, kook ball. Like, and they just like, but like a lot of people in the city got contracted to head on up into the mountains and actually make this manor house. And then people lost track of them for like two or three decades. He would host private performances that he would send invites to like specific people in the city. It started out with like his rich friends. Right. And then he did like a fucking Willy Wonka golden ticket thing one year. Oh my God. Where like, he was like, now you get to come up to that.
So it's like, oh, you get treated to this weekend at this beautiful manor house and you can wash off some of your smell. Everyone in bright ports got a little smell and you're treated to like a beautiful performance. And then you're on your way. And then he just stopped doing that all of a sudden. And yeah, about a decade ago, like was the last time this person made any kind of like headlines, any kind of news. And it was mostly people like, imagine Brightport had like Buzzfeed articles and it's like, who remembers? Like, it would be like that type of thing.
Where are they now? Right. It's like, it's Wednesday, nothing's happening. You remember that fucking nut job who stopped making money? Like that type of thing. Only people who are around when the gods were around will remember this. Exactly. Only 1240s kids will remember the, you know, it's one of those things where like someone like, okay, if you were to click on this article, it's like, yeah, what happened to them? You got to sit through the, it's like, this guy did this and here's the history of houses. And it's like, you don't have much to say at all.
And at the end, it's like, ah, he died. Like, like it basically it's like, no one knows what happened to him. So it's just as satisfying as a Buzzfeed article. Okay, good, good, good, good. So I think, Matilda is going to have like the latest plans with the stuff missing next to the one where it showed the addition of the music hall. And she wants to kind of like superimpose them on each other and see exactly where these things are missing. And as she's doing that, she's gonna ask Calypso. So what gets you interested in this mansion? Well, it's, I feel like it should be a long story.
But as far as I'm aware, it currently isn't. I apparently inherited it. I didn't even know I was related to the man if I even actually am. It was a few months ago. I just I haven't had the time to actually look into it until now. Um, Matilda is going to say, oh, wow, that's quite an inheritance. Yeah, yeah. I didn't, especially to not be one you're expecting. It just, you know, came in the letter in the mail. Like, it's all legit, though. I checked in everything and it's just, I'm still not quite sure what to do with it. So it sounds like you haven't been there yet.
No, no, I haven't had time to get out of the city for much of anything, let alone that and with all the rumors going around, I thought it best to maybe look into things before I actually go in person. It seems like there's certainly something going on here. I mean, just touching by the blueprints alone. This is so exciting. First of all, you get like a mansion. And I think your mansion has like secret rooms in it. Like, yeah, I mean, and it sounds like the place hasn't been touched in years. I'm sure there's so many cool finds in there just scattered about.
Yeah, there's probably a lot of interesting things. Of course, there's also the chance, I mean, it's been, who knows what, what was going on in there in the past decade. I mean, it could be cursed or any haunted or filled with any sort of danger, but it sounds kind of exciting, I suppose. Or instead of the danger, it could have rare artifacts or maybe the more books for this library. Well, I suppose we'll see if I'm inclined to make a donation and Calypso's kind of like wicks. If there's anything that you go there and you decide, oh, I don't need this, like this library would always be appreciative of donations, that's for sure.
Yes, we'll have to see what exactly is there, if there's even anything. I feel like Matilda isn't the only person to run the library, but definitely is the only one to give a shit about the library. Like everyone else that works there that like at one point did give a shit, like it's been like beaten out of them over the years. Why the city just ground them up. Matilda still has hope. She refuses to let go. So the library's in a slightly nicer part of town. Not nice enough to not have their Tide Pods locked up, but nice enough that like, you know, like people walking by are usually not well to do, but like, you know, they're not vagrants.
They don't smell like rat pee. Exactly. They're not rocking a number five for smells. So walking by the big glass windows of the library, you're going to see this very fancy boy. I'm sorry to keep calling him a boy, but like, man, so this very fancy lad, let's say. I mean, has he had his bar mitzvah? It doesn't offend me. It would probably offend him. He's just the berries and cream lad. Now, are these windows like large windows because a lot of times natural light isn't really great for books, especially older ones. I'm concerned. I understand that, but this is a pretty well constructed library.
So the opening foyer doesn't really contain so many books. It's more of a welcoming portal for knowledge. So it's more like, Oh, welcome to the library. There's a lovely walnut polish on everything. So it's not faded by the sunlight. I got you. I got you. Perfect. Thank you. No problem. So you're going to see this fancy boy walk by. That sounds like a slur. Like, you're going to see this guy walk by and he's got someone with him in tow. And it's like, man, that guy's dressed for something like a wedding. Like what's going on? And behind him, you're going to see two very much not fancy boys walking behind him.
And then behind him, you're going to see this lanky sasquatchian person walk behind. And then behind him, you're going to see three more thugs. Oh, my God. So there's a parade of shit about to happen. This tells a short story. None of it good. So people know what thedans are, right? Like, they're not common, but it's thedans. They come from the island of Botan. It's a small island. Think almost the Caribbean. Like, it's a very small. Like, so they have a very closed society and seeing one is probably super rare. But knowing about them is like, it's like, oh, yeah, I've heard of that.
Like, yeah, yeah, yeah. So clips are probably like, like, there's this fancy boy probably is like enough shiny stuff on him that it's probably just immediately eye catching through the window. Like, huh? What's this person walking by? And then more people is like, okay, yeah, fancy boy is going to get robbed. Whatever. It's bright for it. And then it's like, Pips will kind of squint and just, is that a faded? And then three more people. There's a bag on his hip that's just like going. Like, the Trail of Peace. Everything about this is like, okay, like, I don't know about Matilda, but Calypso.
Calypso comes from the streets enough where you're watching this. It's like, oh, oh, oh, no. Like, it gets worse as it's man. Does Calypso recognize Fenris? That's a good question. I don't know if they would. Let's do this. Michael, do me a favor on a scale of one to ten. How well known is Fenris in the grifting community? Do you guys frequent the same forums? Like, is it, you know? So he's an up and coming grifter where, like, he seems like he appeared out of nowhere. His mannerism seems like he's gotten skill. Like, oh, no one knows who you are. You still seem pretty young, but it feels like he's got the experience.
Or at least when he goes in and talks to people, it's like, how did you know so and so? I thought only this one random kid I knew back in the day knew about it. Like, it's always like an up and coming. It's like five-ish. Like, there's some people that recognize his ability and who he is. Majority of people, though, are like, oh, it's just competition and I wouldn't know who this guy is. Okay. So you know what? Give me a streetwise roll. Alrighty. Kels this time. Oh, me. So my streetwise. Yeah, give me a little streetwise check. And this would be slightly like, like I'm saying two eights, because it sounds like you're right on the cusp.
It's like, yeah, you know, like, yeah. Okay. Well, that's Ian. No, I'm sorry. I was trying to get rid of the dice, but it ended up just rolling. No, you're fine. Okay. So my streetwise is an eight, then plus savvy. Oh, yeah. Sorry. Class savvy. That's three d eights. And you got to beat a six. So. Congratulations. So I would say, yeah, I'd say that you like on site, you'd know it's like, oh wait, I know that guy. Like maybe not. Yeah. Maybe not I've met him, but it's like, I know of his work type of thing. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Interesting. Yeah. Calypso is kind of like, they look down at the blueprints and then back outside the window.
Like they're kind of torn now because it's like, oh man, we just, they just found out like there's this whole like mystery thing. They want to look at this more, but also whatever's about to happen outside. It seems like they don't necessarily want to get involved, but they want to at least like watch it because it's like, I don't know, like what is happening, but you know, and so they're just kind of like, does Matilda like notice? Um, yeah, I think, uh, sort of her, uh, thought process is like, that's not really something you see around here. Very often.
Um, so she's interested, but at the same time, there's this mystery. Yeah. So it was just getting kind of like, step back, like look at the blueprints and just like put their hand on it. Like, I will be back for these a little bit later today. I could you make sure to keep them safe for me? I just, I'll be back soon. Probably. I saw something outside. I'm going to go check on it. And like, assuming that Matilda's going to stay behind, they're going to go like leave and follow along the parade. One more person adding to the parade. Yeah. Everything about this looks like if you were to see this outside, it's like, shit, I'm going to be asked as a witness.
Man, I don't have time for that today. Like someone's going to question you. It's like, did you see it's like, yes. So everything about this kind of screams. So, okay. Two things I need to know. One, how's this rat doing? Um, so it's a cloth bag. Uh, I guess we need to roll for the rat. So, um, so, okay. I'd say this is a difficulty of two sixes. You know, it's not like a silk bag. It's probably got a little burlap, little fabric type of thing. So the rat's got to beat a six, right? So the rat has a class of rat. Makes sense. Really good at it. He's going to roll an attack against bag.
Um, and he's the prettiest rat. He's a pretty good rat. Um, and, uh, we're going to use might, which isn't great, but he's a rat. Um, so, oh my God. Uh, ha ha. Wow. Okay. So, uh, let's take that four and the three, make a seven. And, uh, that, uh, D8 is going to be that, that two that's a D8. So that's going to be our, uh, effect dye. So this rat has reached a point where like the front half of this rat rats kind of have bulbous butts. Um, so it's going to get to the point where it's hanging out of the bag. So as Calypso walks out of the library again, it's fancy boy and action lad.
And then we go back, um, then it's two thugs. Um, we have Slenderman featuring like rat bag and this, this rat is like, it's, it's inches from the ground. It's like, like it's so it just can't shirk off the bag from its ass. Three more thugs, a Calypso. And at this point we've reached, I think it's coming to a head. I think these thugs are going to make a move because they're in a nicer part of town. There's less competition. And I think they're looking, it's like, okay, I don't know what rat guy's doing, but like, can we like, they, they would be able to look around and go, we got, we're going to draw way too much attention if we don't do something right now.
- Yeah, yeah. You want to do before you get to the even nicer part of town, there are like guards and stuff. - Exactly. - Question. - Yes. - Does, does, is this library fancy enough that it has a second story? And is this library even fancier enough that it has a balcony? - So it- - I want to watch from the balcony. - Oh, dang it. The close the door is a balcony. That's where they would have thought. There's no balcony, but there are two sets of spiral staircases leading up. And that's where some of the, some of the nicer books are kept. So it's like, if you're going to steal, you at least got to get winded.
Like you're going to have to go upstairs. I'm sorry. The library obviously has a nice lock, nice locking doors, that type of thing. But you would be able to see from the second story, like if you're looking, it's like, okay, let's see how this goes. - Yeah. She's like me just looking out the window, just watching the people outside going, what are these kids doing now? - Get it away from the building, you kids. Do you guys want to answer some questions? - Sure. - No. - Yes. - Everybody ignore the fact that we're in completely different clothes. It's totally the same day.
- I think I might be wearing the same shirt. I think I'm wearing the same shirt. - I think I almost put on the same shirt and then I like deliberately did it. Because I was like, wait a second. - We had a costume change. From different headphones. - I might be wearing the same pants though. I don't know. - You are not wearing the same shirt though. Because I have the file files up here and. - Ooh, cotton 4k. - Nope. Not of us all. Our continuity person took off. So this is what we have. - I think I just need better lighting actually. - I'll just color correct everything.
Really important after effects. - There's lots of colors. - We'll have the budget of like fucking Avatar. - God. - Oh my God. So I got a couple of anonymous questions and what we're doing is we're kind of slowly collecting them. So if you want to ask questions, you can send it to us either on Discord or messages or whatever. We're in the process of switching over our email for the first time in 10 years to like a show email. - Yeah I saw that Bree said like hers something. I don't know where I saw it, but it said brianna@dnrpodcast.com. And I was like, are we all getting emails?
- Well, no. Because that's how you get. - I don't think we all need them. - That's how you get requests for certain pics. And we're not doing that. - I don't need another email. I'm good. - They can send it to Jason and if they're appropriate, they can filter them back to us. - Yeah. - Jason and Bree don't send anything to us. - It's never appropriate. That's why. - But I want to hear it. I want to hear it. I want to know what we're thinking. - Do you know how much junk I've seen sent to the DNR podcast? I'm changing emails because it's so full of dicks. I got to get out of it.
- Oh, okay. I didn't know which type of junk he sent. - I didn't know where else to send it. - You don't have to call James out like that. - I didn't know where else to send it. - Wait, why would people... I don't... - I got to send it. - Why would Jason do that? - I get to do a lot of sends every day. - You know what? If you don't bring your camera, I wouldn't even be mad. - It's too crazy. - It's great HD. - It's gross. - Yeah, it's like, man, it's like looking at 2006 porn. I just can't get into this, James. Thanks. Yeah, show@dandrpodcast.com is what... Because I'm not a person, I'm the show.
So I'm going to do that or the dandrpodcast@gmail.com. But here's a question that is kind of a play on one we did for "Packbound," actually, I think it was. But we're going to go around and I want everyone to just say what your favorite movie is. And then the rest of us have to give it a rating on a scale of one to 10. - I won't know any of these. I'll call them all zero. Fuck y'all. - Well, out of words. Okay, everybody out there. Val, you came in so aggressive tonight. Like so, like what, is there anything we can do? Have you been drinking? - My cats are dying.
- I know, but I didn't do it. - What's happening? - What was the wording? Because the word is like, I have some things to talk to you about your continuity and it was something very- - I have some continuity issues to confront Jason about. I think it's the exact words. - Okay, well, we're going to do that in this Q&A. Let's make it awkward up in here. That's what I would. Like that's how we're sending people home. - Because I have questions. I want to know. - See, though, that's not- - I don't mean it like that. I mean, truly, I want to know. 'Cause it's possible that it's not a continuity issue and it's just things haven't been explained the same way twice, so then it's like misaligned in my head.
- Well, I haven't given you a date for what you're playing in yet. - What? - I haven't given you guys the date that you started playing. - Oh, it doesn't have to do with the date. No, that's not the issue. - Okay, I didn't think you said continuity. So I figured it was a time issue. - Oh, no, no. It's like when, you know, in one scene, someone has their sunglasses on their head and then you go to the next shot and it's on their face again. - Something didn't match up. - Oh, something didn't match up. - It's not like it matched up to me being a human. - Yeah, no, I assumed so.
Like the kind of stuff that people make YouTube videos about and it doesn't actually matter at all for the quality of the whole story. - Oh! - Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. - It's ruined. - Can we start doing like DNR goofs like they have on IMDb? Like all the goofs that you can just start listing them? - Yes, but it's all Val and it's, you know what sucks? That doesn't swing both ways. Because if I confront you, you just go like, I don't care, like you don't care. It's not fair. It's not like if I confront you about some stuff, then you just let it roll off your back.
- Like what? - I don't know, I can't think of anything. I don't sit and do that to you. So I don't know. - Well, I'm genuinely asking because it pertains to what we're doing in our arc in this group. - Okay, we're answering this movie question. - I'm genuinely curious. - I'm curious now. - I have a favorite movie. - Let's go. - I have like- - Let's go Kelsey. (laughing) - I would say "Arrival." - Yeah. - Is that an alien thing? - Yeah, I don't know that movie. - But it's the director that did the newest dude movie, which is really good. - Is that Jodie Foster?
- I can't remember who's in "Arrival." - No, it's Natalie Portman, I think, right? Isn't it? - No, that's "Annihilation." Which is like, it's just like a step down from my favorite movie, but the books are also really good. - You know what? - Yeah, "Arrival." - Who is in "Arrival?" Yeah, we got to know now. - It's Amy Adams. - Amy Adams, yes, thank you. - Oh, Jeremy Renner. - She writes on the wall with the aliens. - I was thinking of the "Arrival" with-- - With Charlie Sheen? - Oh, Charlie Sheen. - Oh! - Never mind. - And the fact that the digi-degrade leg aliens that like-- - Yes!
- Yeah. - Holy hell. - Goatee Charlie Sheen is what I was thinking of. Yeah, no, yours is better. I haven't seen "Arrival," but it's better. - I don't think I've ever seen "Arrival." - It's a really good standalone movie. - Yeah, it's real good. - I would give that a 10 out of 10. Is that the scale we're doing out of 10? - Sure. - Yeah. - Sure. - Two thumbs up. - Sure. - Can I say that I appreciate your boldness? I like when people give things 10 out of 10. Like, I think-- So there's a lot of people who jump up and down about the rating scale for video games. - Oh, yeah.
- I think-- Like, giving something a 10 doesn't mean it's perfect. It means that it did the best it could in that genre for that thing. I love it when people give things 10s. - I like that. I like that. Yeah, that's cool. Yeah, this whole, like, 9 out of 10 isn't perfect. Like, fuck off with that. Get out of here. - Yeah, no. I mean, like, why have a 10 on your scale if it's unattainable, right? - Mm-hmm. - I mean, those times in school where, like, look, if you want an A, you're gonna have to go above and beyond. - Yeah, there's some teachers who will, like, give you a 99, even though you've got everything correct.
- Mm-hmm. - That's bullshit. That's-- - I mean, that's-- - Essentially, I never had one of those teachers. - That's just the Kobayashi Maru. Then you can't fucking-- - Right, right. - What's the point? - Yeah. - You look at them, and you're like, who hurt you? - Like, even if it's that? Like-- - Yeah, even if it's, like, a multiple choice test, you get a 99. - Well, then, how do you get a-- how do you get-- - You physically can't, and they're like, there's just always room for improvement. - Oh. - But it's a multiple choice. - What if it's-- - What? Wait, wait, wait.
That's-- it's not an essay. Like, if you say it's an essay, then it's like, whatever, you're a dick, but fine. But, like, if you answer all the things-- - No, I think it happened to someone, like, where, like, they literally answered all of the questions correctly. - I'd be furious. - That's like-- that's like, we-- we do-- like, we had these self-evaluations at the-- at some time at some of the places that I've worked at. And we always get, like, production managers who are like, okay, do your self-evaluations, but hey, no one-- no one's tens, right?
Right? And I'm like, bitch, I am tens across the board. I'm here. I am here, like, giving my labor to you, and it is great. I'm ten, ten, ten. I'm here, baby. I am good. - See, that activates spite mode for me, because I was going to be hard enough on myself. Then you say, I can't be ten? Well, fuck you. - Yeah, yeah, excuse me. - It can always be better. - No, not here. - It's up to me to put me down. - Yeah. - I'm a ten-- I'm a ten for this place. This place needs to rise to my-- to my excellence. - I'm giving you a ten for what you earn. - Yeah. - Uh, Michael, favorite-- oh, I haven't-- okay, so I haven't seen Arrival, so I can't-- I don't feel good rating it.
- I haven't seen it yet. - You should watch it. - It looks-- I'm going to definitely watch it. - Nine out of ten because of Amy Adams. - Uh, just hold up, uh, hold up fingers for how many-- three, two, one, hold up fingers. - For what? - Three? - Nine, sorry. - For which movie? - Wait, this is how that works. - Arrival. - Oh, Arrival? - Oh, we're holding-- okay. I was like, what are we doing? - Yeah, no. - I'll get back to you. - We keep getting sidetracked. Yeah, I'm going to watch it now. That's on my-- that's on my watch list. - Thing is, I probably have seen it and just totally forget, but-- - I definitely didn't.
- I mean, it's worth watching again and it's really good. Like, just like the, like, alien and ship design, I think is neat. - It's cool. - I should go watch it. - I've-- I've started this thing where I try to watch, uh, at least three movies a week. And last year-- - That's a lot. - It is, but like, I'm sitting here rendering a lot of stuff. So like, I have-- you know what I mean? I have time to have something in the background. So like, last year I watched like 200 movies. I'm out of movies. I got no movies. Like, it's so like, this is great. Anything I can add to.
- I got some home movies you might like. - Oh my God. - I think it sounded like Jason already had all those. That's what's in the email. - He's not going to watch it though. He's just going to delete it from his inbox. - Well, he's sending me like TikTok-sized stuff. - James, you, uh, you scared Michael off. - You drove him away. - On pure thoughts. - Val, what's your-- you know what? What's your favorite movie? - My favorite movie is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. - OK. - It's a pretty good movie. - I really, really like it. I watched it first when I was very young and did not understand what was happening.
- I've actually seen that one. - And then I watched it again when I was a little older. And I was like, OK, I understand now. And then I watched it again when I was older. And I was like, damn, this is so good. So I really, really like the movie. - I remember enjoying it. I think I need a rewatch though. But yeah. - I remember being very sad watching it. - Oh, it's real sad. It's a big sad. - Yeah. - But like, it was really well done. - That's one of my favorite movies for editing because they do a lot of like visual effects that are basically just done by like moving from one side of the screen or cutting from one side of one frame to another.
And it flows really well. And they like do things where you like revisit stuff and it's re-edited a different way to like make you feel a different way. It's cool. - I would give that a seven and a half. - Damn. - Because it can be very sad. - OK, that's fair. - It's very well done. But like, it's one of those movies I want, not to give any spoilers in case people want to see this, but like it's one of those movies where you're watching it and you can kind of see things tanking and you want to reach out to the characters and go, no, and fix it, but you can't.
And it's like, oh, well. - And you just have to watch it just go worse. Like it's very horrifying. I think like the whole premise behind it is something that scares me a lot. And like, that's why I enjoy the movie so much. Because it feels like very real to me. - I might watch that again, because it's been like a good decade since I've seen that. - Was that? - I missed it. What video? The movie? - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. - Never seen that movie. - With Jim Carrey. - Was that Jim Carrey's first dramatic role? - Yes, Jim Carrey. - Or was it? - I'm thinking DNR Watch Party.
- Ooh, yeah. Well, we got to watch Jim Carrey's 23 first before we watch Eternal Sunshine. That was gold. That's amazing. I actually didn't hate that movie. I know it's not good, but like I didn't hate it. That's where Jim Carrey plays a man named Fingerling. It's a weird-- - Like the case? - He sees that number everywhere, right? - Mm-hmm. - Yeah. - It's going insane. - It's like, yeah, it's a weird-- - Is it like that Nick Cage movie, Knowing? - You know it's so spooky. I was going to say, when you said Arrival and then something about the writing on the walls, I was like, that sounds like Knowing to me.
- Arrival is a million times better than Knowing. - I think we watched Knowing maybe through Redbox or like Netflix DVD rentals, maybe. - I don't remember why or where I watched it. It was a very long time ago. - Netflix, here's the thing. Nick Cage flicks just kind of happen to you. You don't have to-- - Oh yeah, I mean, it is like, I would say it is worth watching if you have a drink on hand and just are looking for just a time, because it is certainly one of those. - You know what? I'll trade you. I just watched Nick Cage's Next, where he sees a minute into the future, Garbo.
- Oh God, that sounds horrible. - Garbo. He's got like long hair. It's got, here, I'll hand you that and I'll take Knowing from you. - Oh my gosh, just the poster. The poster alone is like, oh yeah, it's like people that are like blue for some reason, because that's just how the editing was. - Oh man, it's when Jessica Biel was in movies and we, yeah, you know. - But have you all seen the trailer for the new Nicolas Cage movie? - I have. - Which one is that? - Yeah, what is it? - It's so, okay, here's the title of the movie. - What is it? - The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.
And it's a movie about how Nick Cage is in a lot of debt and needs to do shit to get out of his debt. - That's just his life. - But he's playing Nick Cage. - Oh my God. - He's playing Nick Cage. - Hold on, let me just read you this story. Unfulfilled and facing financial ruin, actor Nicolas Cage accepts a $1 million offer to attend a wealthy fan's birthday party. Things take a wildly unexpected turn when the CIA operative recruits Cage for an unusual mission. - I'm 110%, you know what? Bravo, Mr. Cage. - They went full force. - There's so many layers. - They said I'm gonna Nicolas Cage the fuck out of this movie.
Like y'all should watch the trailer. - He's played himself. - Okay. - Oh my gosh, I need to see this. - I'll say this. That man has been on a bit of a low-key career renaissance. Watch Colors Out of Space. - Oh, that's so good. - It's so fucking good. - It's so good. - Pig is good and the fucking, honestly, it's just Freddy Fazbear, but he works in a haunted fucking Chuck E. Cheese. It's really good. - I was very afraid to say that Nick Cage started the Five Nights at Freddy's movie. - It is basically. - I couldn't get the license, but like it's... - Before that I watched...
- Oh my gosh. - Oh, what was that old kid's show? Oh shit, I'm not gonna get in that. It was from the 70s. - Mr. Rogers. - Where they wore costumes. No, it was like... - From the 70s? - They took this, pardon me, this old kid's show and then they made a horror movie out of it recently. - Oh, I know what you're talking about. - Willy's Wonderland. - Yes, I can't remember the title. - And it is so bad. And then you watch the Nick Cage movie that's similar and that is so good in comparison. Oh, what the... - I'm in. Good for Nick Cage. You know what? He's paid his dues.
Poor guy. He had to give up his action comics number one. No one should have to do that. - Secret copula. (laughing) - What was that movie? Something banana? - Who is next? - Something... - James. - Anyway, yes. - What's your favorite movie? - I haven't like... The stuff I've watched in the last while, I don't really have a favorite movie, but when I was younger, I was tied with two. It was Shawshank, Credence and the Green Mile. And... - Those are both classics. - I would pick... Oh, I don't know. Let's see. It's hard to pick. Both Stephen King and both directed by the same person, I think too.
Let's go with Green Mile. - Okay. I wouldn't want with Shawshank. That's just me. - Well, that seems like the only voiceover. - I know, but I'm like a Morgan Freeman voiceover. That's the only voiceover. - Tom Hanks. Tom Hanks. - Also... - That's why Jason's favorite movie is March of the Painted. - It is. Oh, jeez. Man. I actually enjoyed Farce of the Penguins, which was the Bob Saget voice. That is the pinnacle of like, I'm in Blockbuster and it's like, what is this? I'll rent it. - Yes, it was a Blockbuster. That's where I remember seeing it. - Oh, for the record of what I was thinking before, it's called the Banana Splits movie.
- Yes, yes. That's not it. - Okay. - It's like the kind of movie you would watch at DragonCon, you know, for going for the worst movie possible. - Oh, are you wearing a Matt Foley t-shirt? - Yeah. - Oh, yay. Okay. I'm happy. - Thank you. Somebody asked me if it was a Martyn Woods. I almost punched him. - Oh, God, no. It was somebody funny. (all laughing) - Oh, yeah, Green Mile. What do you guys rate Green Mile? Have you seen, who's seen Green Mile? - I don't think I've seen it. - That's crazy to me. - Michael Clark Duncan, Tom Hanks. - I mean, I know it. Yeah, and bees and flies or something.
- Bees? - Come out of the mouth. - B's? - Yeah, it's during the mouth. - Sam Rockwell. - It's good. I thought. - I, do you know what? - It's sad too. - But it's hopeful sad. Kinda. Sort of. - It's. - The more I remember it, it's like, well. - There's lots of cruelty. It's about a bunch of inmates on death row basically. - Yeah. - You know. - But sometimes it's about the wacky times they have on death row. - Sure. There's a little mouse that was cute. - There's a mouse, a circus mouse. I get, you know what? Fuck it, I give that a 10. I would watch that and Shawshank every weekend when it was on TNT because it was on every weekend.
- Even if you owned it on DVD or whatever, you still watch it on TV with all the commercials. - Who's got time to like pop in a DVD and load that? - All right, you're already into it. - Yeah. Ian. - Okay. I have a lot of favorite movies. But one that I always come back to that I watch just because it's comforting and it's something that I love. And it's going to be a surprise to no one. And it's probably not going to be rated very high. I don't think I would rate it very high. But The Return of the Jedi is one that is one of my absolute favorite movies. - That's not.
- That's not, you can't like rate that at this point. I mean, like objectively we can always like, oh, it was marketed to children. It's like, yes, so what? - I mean, it's got some goofiness in it that it has some of the best characters ever. - That's part of Star Wars. - For sure, for sure it is. - That is intrinsic. - Star Wars is campy. - Yeah, it totally is. And I love like all the Jabba palace stuff. I absolutely love. I love Luke meeting up with Darth Vader. It's so fucking cool. It's so good. And it just like, it gives me shivers. I'm thinking about it now.
Just like, it's cool. Yeah, loved it as a kid. - And I love it now. For whatever reason, I had watched the first two movies. The first time I'd watched Jedi was the 1996 re-release. And when like you get to the CG dancing music number, I was so confused. It's like, this is the movie everyone's jumping. What the fuck is wrong with everybody? - Oh God, that song is called Jedi rocks and it's an abomination. - Is that jizz? - Yeah, that is jizz music. That is officially jizz music. - Oh, okay. - I saw Jedi when I was a kid and then also watching the making of Return of the Jedi was fantastic.
- It's so cool. - And then, yeah, that's CG stuff they added in. It's terrible, obviously. - Yeah, I mean, forget the CG stuff. It's not good. And it adds absolutely nothing to the movie, but like what's... - It's, no, I think seeing Ghost on the Hating Project - That makes no sense at all. - It brings me a lot of joy. Not the kind of joy they were in tech before, but it gets a lot every time. - I want to know what sexy Jessica rabbit-lipped monster was that was singing that song. - Slice noodles? - Yeah, slice noodles. - Slice noodles. - No, no, no, no, no.
You're thinking realistic. Like this was like a cartoon, like terrible. Like she has like a... Like my memory was she has like this long, almost like a beak. And at the end of it were like cartoon kissy lips. - Lips like slice noodles. - Slice noodles. - What the fuck? - Oh, she was in Club Wars. - She had a nose. - And then she tried to assassinate him. - Oh, I just got noodles. - Her species is Pa Loick. She's a Pa Loick. - Slice noodles. - The zero arc. - Wasn't the name of the chef in Clone War, wasn't that a silly name too? Like Dex Rocket Buster or some shit?
- Yeah, like Dexter. - He was great. - He had his own beauty. - Jesus. - Dexter. - Yeah. - There was absolutely zero reason for that scene. - Trillion dollar franchise. - I should have got that info somewhere else. - But what's really cool, what's really neat is right now, if you're listening to this right now or watching this right now, the Book of Boba Fett is happening and it's all taking place back on Tatooine by Jabba's palace and like that stuff just like, it feels like coming home, like watching that and like seeing all that stuff again. - Is anybody watching Book of Boba Fett other than Ian and I clearly?
- I haven't seen the Mandalore. - Oh, I haven't seen the Mandalore. - Ian, we should talk another time 'cause I'm loving the callbacks. - Okay, I was watching with hope, but like I didn't wanna like get my hopes up too much 'cause the last time I did that, we got Last Skywalker. - And you know. - I haven't seen that movie and I never will and I'm very happy about it. - I just wasn't, just Rey is a perfect character that never has any struggles. So it's kind of tough to get invested in the hero's journey when you know it's like you're gonna win. - Yeah, okay.
I've seen the last Jedi, which is the best Star Wars movie and I don't need to see what I can crash keep after it. - Yeah. (laughing) - The best Star Wars stuff isn't happening on the silver screen and it hasn't been for a long time. It's been happening in animation and television and those are the coolest things ever. - And video games. - And video games. - Fantastic. - And video games, yeah. - There's some good like short story anthologies that are written by people like those sort of like, that's the kind of Star Wars stuff that's really good if you just get different people doing their own take on it.
- I like Knights of the Republic, that was a good video game. - Oh, you're gonna be making that too. - I know. - Ooh. - Yeah. - I hope they don't torture it like Final Fantasy VII. - I tried to play that a while ago. (laughing) What are you talking about? (laughing) - Sorry. - Hot take. - Hot take games. - Hot take. (laughing) - Yeah, really. (laughing) You mean the remake that everyone loves? - Not everybody. (laughing) - Clearly. I've never heard anyone not like it before. (laughing) This is the first time. - I got to a different show. (laughing) - Michael, what's your favorite movie?
(laughing) - So I'm torn to those like the classics. Like I love Back to the Future. - Mm. - Oh yeah. - So many to pick from. - For one of the like more modern, I really like the first Iron Man. But if I had to go for like ultra favorite over time, Back to the Future I think wins. Just the way it is, but yeah. - Which I can't agree with that. - I know like people didn't like three a lot. I thought it was fun. I like all of them. - I mean, that's. - Yeah, he's a favorite. He's always been like, I used to have like all the comics and stuff. He's always been my favorite out of all of them.
So I don't know, I liked all of it. I appreciated all the new takes and everything. So I've never really said that. - That just reminds me of Into the Spider-Verse is probably another one of my top favorite movies. - That's a very good movie. - That's a very good movie. - And it's getting us all. - Oh man. - I went to the movie theaters today for the first time in many, many years it feels like. (laughing) - We watched the latest Spider-Man. - Oh yeah. - Like let's do this. Yes, you know, be brave and go to my nearest theater at a 1 p.m. show. And there shouldn't be a lot of people.
Thankfully there wasn't. (laughing) - I haven't seen it yet. - That's what I did for duty. - Me neither, no spoilers. - It's like weeks after it came out. - It's good. - I know, I want to watch it. And like, of course that's when we stop with the, oh, you can rent it at home. Like we just stopped that. Like all of a sudden it's like, no, no, no. Risk your life, go to theaters. Like it's very fine Disney. (laughing) - I haven't seen any Spider-Man. - I just saw the picture. - I saw all the Venoms and I was like, yeah. I think that's the one that speaks to me. (laughing) - Oh, did you?
- I haven't actually seen Venom, but I have read some fan fiction for Venom. It's very good. - Did your mic change? - Yeah, I think your mic changed. - Yeah, it switched. - How did that? - You flipped out of existence and came back in. - Yeah, did you like refresh or something? - No, it's not letting me change. - Sorry. - Yeah, you can't change it whilst recording. It's like, come back. - Oh no. - Well, okay. (laughing) - That was that. - Jason, what's your favorite movie? Did we do everyone? - No, well, no, we haven't done Jason. - Yeah, Jason, what's your favorite movie?
- Oh, we didn't rate Back to the Future. - Oh, we didn't rate Back to the Future. - Howdy, I kind of gave up on the idea part way through 'cause it's like, how do you rate like Star Wars? - Ding dong. - I did, you know what? - Hello. - We started. - Oh, a Jedi. - Hello. - I get Jedi like full marks. - If I'm being honest with myself, Jedi's probably like a six or a seven, but it's a seven. - No, really. - But like in your heart, like, you know. - I think it depends too, when in your life you've watched these movies because you're so awestruck as a child watching this stuff because how did they do that?
And it's just amazing. Yeah, it's like you go back and watch some old kid shows and stuff now and you're kind of like, this is trash. - Oh, that reminds me. I don't know if you've seen it in a while, but Bram Stroker's Dracula, the Francis Ford Coppola film, that has, speaking of like, how did they do that? That has some practical in-camera effects that to this day, I have no idea. Like it cannot be explained. I do not know. And it is phenomenal. Like it is amazing. - It's vampires. - Yeah, it's magic. - It's so cool. - I mean, like the first half of that movie is real good and then it kind of goes a little crazy, but I wish movies would just, you know, take practical effects further, you know, advanced them further than relying on CG sometimes because there's even now still a lot of CG that just doesn't cut it.
- If you want good practical effects, you should watch What We Do in the Shadows. - Oh, seriously? - Yes, I saw it. - You're trying to get me into that. - Yeah, I saw the reason we started watching it and we talked about it on Discord and I'm so, so happy. - The movie was fantastic. - The show is a million times better. - Yeah, the show is a real- - I haven't seen the movie. I watched, I've watched the first season so far. - It's incredible. Like it's, it's very, very good. Like it's just- - Well, now that Kelsey suggested it, I guess I'll watch it. - I got for me to watch it by suggesting it.
She's enjoying it, so I feel good about my recommendation. - Yeah, the movie's like prime British, like dry humor and it's fine. It's just like, it kind of meandered too much for me. And I guess the show is like a little more focused and like- - And it's like real actual, like good, like characters and character arcs and stuff. And so like an interesting story to go along with the like comedy and stuff. And it's just, it's very good. Yeah. - Something to say, like when I think about practical effects, I think back to the future, I go back and watch it all the time and it never tried to be more than it is.
And that's what I would like, the effects are done well, the camera shots are done well, the whole, the scenes, like they didn't over the top. I really like, like sometimes like today, there's a lot of shows that try to just amp it to 11 and try to go crazy. And you're like, what are you trying to do? When you look at it like five years later and you're like, oh my gosh. - Usually the more stuff you throw at the screen, the more it could age poorly. Like that's, I think it's kind of what you found out with Star Wars. It's like, no, that brontosaurus shitting in the background is prime, we need that.
(all laughing) You know, like- - Way to flush out the scenes there. - Yeah, man, that's what, man, that's what it needed. - Bring me back to when they took the big long piece of black paper and just pulled it across the table. (all laughing) - I know things. - Um, Val. - Uh-huh. - Jason, what's your favorite movie? - I haven't forgotten. - Huh? - Oh God, yeah. - You've lost. - You've lost? - Oh yeah. - Oh yeah. - That's a good, yeah. - Yeah, yeah. - Check this out. - I'm your fucking huckleberry. - I don't know why. It's, there's something about that movie that just like the first time I saw it, it's like, fuck.
Like it just clicks. Like I'm not a huge Western guy and it's like, I don't know, the good guys aren't all good and the bad guys aren't completely bad, but they're shitty. And I don't know, it's like an hour and a half of just getting your head kicked in. And then finally there's like comeuppance and it's just so satisfying. The first time like I was showing it to Bree and Elle, like they're watching, it's like, are they ever gonna do anything? And it's like, no, no, no, just keep going, keep going. And then like, ah, the train scene is amazing. So yeah, no, that's, I've watched that.
- That's a great movie. - Yeah, that's a tight movie, do anything. I don't know, like it feels like there's stuff going on and there's like tension boiling all the time in that film. I can't think of a single scene. I'd be like, you don't need that. Like they do a really good job of kind of time management 'cause it's like two hours but it doesn't feel like that necessarily. - And there's a couple of legendary mustaches in that movie. - Oh my God, if I could grow into a Sam Elliott if that's my final form, yeah, that'd be great. Like, how does he eat? He's one of those actors by the way, he's been the same age for like 35 years and we all just let him go.
